Filled with over 30 full- and travel-size beauty goodies from brands such as YSL, MAC, Nars and L’Occitane, this year’s holiday beauty calendar from Hudson’s Bay will not disappoint. To take it to the next level, the store partnered with Lesley Hampton to create the reusable calendar in the Canadian designer’s signature palette, along with design elements that reflect her Anishinaabe indigeneity, such as the Ojibwe expression Mino Bimaadiziwin, which translates to ‘the good life.’ With the sale of each calendar, 10 per cent of net proceeds will go to Hudson’s Bay Foundation’s charitable partner Indspire, an Indigenous organization which Hampton is especially enthusiastic about supporting as one of the organization’s past award recipients.

If you’ve quietly tucked away your facial sunscreen for the year, consider yourself upgraded. Canadian beauty brand Ilia has finally launched its super-successful liquid skin tint with SPF 40 in the Great White North. Differing FDA rules surrounding sunscreen have allowed the liquid foundation to become a best-seller in the U.S. since last year, and now Canadians can get their mitts on all 30 fragrance- and oil-free-shades. You can slather it on knowing your skin’s protected from UVA, UVB, infrared and blue rays thanks to its 12 per cent non-nano zinc oxide, while hyaluronic acid, hydrating squalane and niacinamide work to plump up your skin and even it out.

Your manicurist called and she wants you to use this hand mask. Meant to work its best magic overnight, the mask is 40 per cent glycerin, a popular humectant that works to lock in moisture. Rounding out the sensorial magic are conditioning mango and murumuru butters, sorrel and melon oils and Riri’s favourite Barbados cherry extract. If all this has you thinking that you might just drift off smelling (and dreaming) of a tropical paradise, well, you’d be right.

The pandemic has been tough — I understand that this is not a hot take. Heightened anxieties, isolation and very real tragedies have made the last 18 months especially bleak. Turning away from all of that to instead appreciate and radiate beauty is a tremendously difficult feat, but it is exactly what Connie Fleming has accomplished with her latest project, an artwork exhibition titled Ink.

connie fleming
Artwork by Connie Fleming

While she is most well known for her work on the runway as a model in the ‘90s and early 2000s, Connie began drawing at a young age, “Being a trans kid was super hard, it was violent both verbally and physically. But drawing was something I was rewarded for and it gave me hope for the future,” she explained.

The exhibition is featured at Never Apart’s art gallery in Montreal and will be on display until December 18. Those unable to travel to Montreal can tour the gallery virtually on Never Apart’s website.

Never Apart is a non-profit organization that aims to educate folks on equality and social movements by highlighting art and music from a diverse group of artists.

Connie Fleming
Artwork by Connie Fleming

Inspired by the work of Antonio Lopez, George Stavrinos and George Petty, among others, Connie has drawn a variety of black and white portraits and figures for this collection. Some subjects are featured with their natural hair, others with durags and nearly all of them are heavily tattooed.

“Hopefully this is part of the progression of society,” she said, “now that the beauty of African features and hair is really being seen and not just pawned off immediately as unprofessional or ugly.”

When did you first begin illustrating?

It was always a part of my life. I remember even before first grade I was always drawing. When I was little in Jamaica my mom was a teaching assistant and when I was two or three she taught me how to write my name and my numbers and I was obsessed. I always had a pencil in my hand, I was always doodling and drawing. Illustration has remained [into adulthood] my solace, and is a safe space for me.

What was it like making art during the pandemic?

It really saved me from going crazy. It saved me from falling into TikTok and Youtube rabbit holes. I had already seen everything on Netflix and I just felt an atrophy in my body and my mind. I needed to get out and do something.

How did the pandemic inspire this exhibition?

A really good friend passed during the pandemic, Nashom Wooden aka Mona Foot, and then I had another friend who passed as well, and between that and the daily COVID death tolls it was really dragging down my spirit. I felt really drained by the idea of connecting through death and I wanted to contribute some beauty to the world. So I started to post my art online and I got a really great response. I was like, “Let me just keep putting out some beauty and life into the world,” and that became the direction. I never expected it to turn into anything.

Why did you choose to use a mostly black and white colour palette for these illustrations?

I wanted to get that tonal richness that you can get from black and white. Like film noir, that sort of quality. I also really wanted to get the depth of African American skin without using colour, to show how light played off black skin.

I notice that many of the subjects in your pieces have tattoos, what was the inspiration behind that?

With the political atmosphere with George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement I was seeing Black bodies being criminalized and I wanted to show the beauty instead. I wanted to show that tattoos aren’t about being a thug or a criminal, but that it’s about expression. It’s almost like you get to be your own personal billboard.

But I also wanted to honour the history of tattooing because it connects us all in a way. Today we may be immersed in technology with our phones always in our hands but we still need human connection. To begin with tattoos were symbolism, whether it was your tribe, or religion or a rite of passage, it was a symbol that we were all part of humanity. I think these aesthetic expressions are important.

What would you say you are most proud of from this entire process?

Two things, first is highlighting the beauty of African and Black features and second is pushing myself as an artist and really honing my craft. I want to pat myself on the back, I learned that I have the ability to create and mold, a little like some of my heroes — but don’t tell anybody I ever said that!

Supermodel extraordinaire Gigi Hadid and her boy band boyfriend Zayn have split once again after a supposed Hadid-Malik family argument sure to send fan pages of the world spiralling.

TMZ first broke the news of the argument on October 28. Unnamed sources told the tabloid that Zayn Malik had allegedly struck Hadid matriarch and former Real Housewives star Yolanda Hadid last week, and that the mom of symmetrically-faced trio Gigi, Bella and Anwar was thinking of filing a police report.

Later that day, Zayn posted your standard-issue celeb notes app screenshot to Twitter, writing: “As you all know I am a private person and I very much want to create a safe and private space for my daughter to grow up in. A place where private family matters aren’t thrown on the world stage for all to poke and pick apart. In an effort to protect that space for her I agreed to not contest claims arising from an argument I had with a family member of my partner’s who entered our home while my partner was away several weeks ago.”

Still with us? Zayn’s message insinuates that the aforementioned TMZ source may not have been a leak at all. Since the birth of Khai, Zayn and Gigi have strived (and mostly succeeded) to protect her from the public. If we’re left to read between the lines of his letter, the former One Direction member appears to agree an argument occurred after Yolanda allegedly entered his and Gigi’s home where the couple’s one-year-old daughter was present while Gigi was away.

This is where the timeline gets…confusing. Updated reports from TMZ say the couple actually broke up a month ago, and that the argument took place Sept. 29. Zayn also told TMZ he denies striking Yolanda, but later reports say he was in fact charged with four criminal offences and plead guilty to one.

Since then, it’s been your standard passive aggressive social media tactics. In a since deleted IG story, Bella wrote: “I can do nothing for you but work on myself. You can do nothing for me but work on yourself.”

Bella and Anwar also no longer follow Zayn on Instagram, and Zayn does not follow them either. Although, Gigi and Zayn do still follow each other (this is important, okay?).

In a statement to Entertainment Tonight, a rep for Gigi said: “Gigi is solely focused on the best for Khai. She asks for privacy during this time.”

This feels like the end of a tumultuous relationship for the on-again off-again couple, who first began dating in 2015 but broke up in 2018, only to get back together a month later. Reports then surfaced that the pair split in January 2019 (does it ever drive you crazy/just how fast the night changes?) and rekindled their romance once again in December. In April, Gigi confirmed her pregnancy with Zayn, and Khai was born in September 2020.

We await more clarity on the unfortunate breakup as more news is sure to find its way to our feeds in the coming weeks.

So, everyone is obsessed with Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian right now (we get it) — but can we just take a moment to appreciate the internet’s new favourite couple, Zoë Kravitz and Channing Tatum?

The actors were spotted in NYC earlier this week sporting complementary cozy fits and confirming their relationship status with some loved-up PDA (hand holding, arm around the shoulder — you know, the works).

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Elder Ordonez (@elderordonez1)

Kravitz, the queen of effortless style, opted for a cream turtleneck and on-trend wide-leg blue jeans paired with The Row’s wool ‘Belona Coat’ and coveted ‘Zipped Boot 1’ black leather ankle boots. Tatum’s casually cool cream hoodie, black chinos and simple white slip-on shoes were the perfect match for Kravitz’s minimal mood. It seems these two have cracked the code to street style coordination, wouldn’t you say? For your viewing pleasure, we present Zoë Kravitz and Channing Tatum’s best street style moments.

Let’s take it back to where it all began: mid-August in NYC. The duo set the rumour mill in motion after photos surfaced of Tatum (starring in Kravitz’s directorial debut, Pussy Island) riding a black BMX bike with Kravitz walking next to him, already twinning in jeans and faded charcoal tops. Though a grunge approach to minimalism is nothing new for Kravitz, we can’t help but wonder if Tatum took a page out of her style book while studying The Batman star’s fan accounts on Instagram (which, by the way, he actually follows).

A few days later and still in good spirits, the common theme here was something blue. Kravitz wore the perfect summer slip dress from Araks while Tatum took more of a laid back approach in a white graphic tee, patchwork blue jeans and classic Converse, both accessorizing with some iced coffee.

Two words: matching monochrome. Zoë Kravitz and Channing Tatum may have chosen different colour palettes here, but they both understood the assignment when it came to nailing the monochromatic style.

Kravitz kept it low-key on this August excursion in an all-black ensemble, while maintaining her Cool Girl status with a cropped tank, flowy pants and square-toe sandals. Tatum’s tee, meanwhile, made a…statement. The Magic Mike leading man may have opted for some bold messaging, but his black chinos and Adidas sneakers were still on brand for the couple’s relaxed sense of style.

This year’s Met Gala was a total change of pace for the pair who proved they can do glamour just as well as street style. Kravitz is the ultimate Saint Laurent muse, having worn the brand in 2018, 2019 and, of course, in 2021 to the Met Gala red carpet. After all, she is an ambassador for YSL Beauty. Her bejewelled barely-there gown turned heads alongside Tatum’s timeless Versace tux. They really can do it all.

We knew Kravitz was capable of delivering major fashion inspo, but now the couple have become a package deal made in street style heaven that we just can’t get enough of. The best part? There are (hopefully) plenty of looks and paparazzi photos to obsess over on the way, as a source told People magazine that the couple is over hiding their relationship and are now more relaxed about the publicity of it all. Needless to say, we’re here for it and we can’t wait for more.

While most of us were watching Girls and gushing over Kate Middleton’s first baby, Angel Chen was mapping out her destiny. At only 17, she uprooted her life in Shenzhen, China, to study fashion at London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins College.

Inspired by John Galliano’s emotive work that spans romance, history and modernity, Chen set out to make a visual impact on the world. After her graduate collection “Les Noces” won the praise of the school faculty, she went on to intern with big fashion names like Vera Wang and Marchesa, launch her own studio in Shanghai and, now, become the first-ever guest designer with Canada Goose.

Smashing gender norms and infusing her work with inspiration from her Chinese culture, Chen is adamant that the Angel Chen woman isn’t gentle, shy, and elegant. She’s brave, cool, independent and expressive, “like a contemporary version of Mulan,” Chen says. Just like the designer, Angel Chen’s Fall 2021 collection for Canada Goose is adaptable and versatile, featuring parkas that can be worn as coats or vests, belted or loose or even inside-out.

We chatted with Chen about her monumental climb through the high-fashion world, her favourite celebrity styling moment (plus: who she’d love to style) and how she hopes to inspire others with her Canada Goose capsule collection.

You’ve been recognized as one of the young designers reinventing the ‘tradition’ of fashion. How do you do that?

I mix traditional and contemporary textures in my design. We’ve actually applied a lot of traditional Chinese elements, fabrics and techniques in our past collections like traditional prints, brocade, ribbon embroidery and gold thread embroidery. However, we’ve created contemporary silhouettes for a twist on traditional Chinese culture and to make it visible and accessible to a larger audience. I really want to present the beauty of Chinese culture to a global audience, and have people see it in a new light.

What was the design process like for your Canada Goose collection?

It is a great honour to work with a heritage brand such as Canada Goose [and] I was looking forward to seeing new chemistry between Eastern and Western culture. The conversation started in October of 2019 and I was lucky enough to visit their headquarters before the pandemic.

As the first-ever guest designer for Canada Goose, it’s a very celebratory moment for both brands. The team was welcoming and supportive throughout the entire process. It was very inspiring to discover such a beautiful manufacturing operation in Toronto, browse through the archives of a 60-year-old brand and learn about how to make a well-crafted down jacket.

The first collection was created during the pandemic which was a hard time. Every part of the process was more difficult than usual for this collection, from design to manufacturing. It’s celebratory that we were able to produce it.

The design process started with a heritage piece – The Snow Mantra — which is the pinnacle of craftsmanship and the ultimate in-element protection. I wanted to ensure I honoured the parka while finding new ways to wear it, including upside down, without sleeves or shortened. With a play on versatility, we combined aspects of both of our signatures. Both the women’s Cropped Snow Mantra Parka and men’s Convertible Snow Mantra are back in new fall colours.

Did your visit to Canada help inspire any elements of the collection?

During my visit to Canada, I was inspired by nature and the beautiful colours as the season transitioned, which became the theme of the collection. This is [seen in] the collection’s colours: a soft green, bright yellow and an impactful blue. These new colours perfectly represent the end of summer, into the beautiful colours of leaves in the fall and finally, to a cool hue for the winter. I want to encourage people to go explore their surroundings while staying true to themselves.

How did your own sense of style or taste impact how you approached designing this collection?

Chinese embroidery has been a signature of our brand. I designed some special embroideries exclusive to our collection, which was inspired by my journey in Canada. Through the embroideries, you will see the story of me travelling to Canada and learning about the amazing craftsmanship of Canada Goose. The characters embroidered represent a curious Angel taking on a journey in Canada and exploring its amazing nature. Other embroidered graphics in the collection show a dragon flying from East to West, an homage of two cultures coming together. I hope this storytelling can inspire people to explore their surroundings along with different cultures and new ideas. It’s telling the story of living in the open.

Is making gender-neutral clothing an important aspect of your work?

I design collections that are relatively gender fluid and contemporary, without boundaries between country, age and gender. The Angel Chen woman is not as gentle, shy and elegant as Chinese women are traditionally depicted. She is brave, cool, independent, expressive and full of thoughts like a contemporary version of Mulan. Angel Chen men are also cool, strong-minded and understanding. However, the characteristics cannot define who they are. They’re versatile and have different sides of personalities, without boundaries. They are contemporary, avant-garde and inspiring, and they create an encouraging vibe to young people in our community.

If you had to pick one, what would you choose as your favourite piece of the collection?

My favourite pieces would be the Convertible Snow Mantra and the Cropped Snow Mantra. You can turn them into a down vest or a short down jacket for different weather conditions. The Cropped Snow Mantra worn upside-down creates a special shoulder line similar to traditional Asian clothing. These two styles are very playful and creative which best represent the collection.

Being stylish in the winter is hard sometimes with all the bulky layers. Do you have any tips?

I had this stereotype that the down jacket is heavy and not fashionable when I was young, but I realized that the down jacket can be cozy and stylish at the same time when I started to explore different ways to wear a normal jacket, like wearing it upside-down and [choosing] an interesting and stylish silhouette. This eventually inspired me to design this capsule collection with Canada Goose, while playing with versatility for function and style.

You’ve worked with a bunch of big-name celebrities. Do you have any favourite moments or looks you’ve created with any of them?

I’ve customized garments for Jackson Yee. My favourite one is from this year, which features the symbolic red colour from Chinese culture. I feel it’s celebratory when people wear bold colours. I can totally imagine Rihanna wearing a yellow Cropped Snow Mantra from our collaboration with a super sexy dress underneath, and walking quickly out of a party.
