Rapper Doja Cat has done more than anyone to push surrealism into the mainstream. Earlier this year, she attended the Schiaparelli Spring 2023 couture show painted lobster red and with 30,000 Swarovski crystals covering her scalp and upper body, each one hand-applied by a team led by makeup artist Pat McGrath . And last year, she wore a black velvet Schiaparelli corset and supersized “ear” earrings that looked like auricular oysters on the half-shell to the Billboard Music Awards. Body language The ear is just one of the body parts — along with eyes, noses, fingers and faces — that pop up regularly in surrealist jewellery . They populate the Freudian dream world and repressed subconscious that Salvador Dalí — an avid Schiaparelli collaborator — and other surrealist artists plundered freely for inspiration. Dalí’s “Ruby Lips” brooch, for instance, is an open mouth created from 18-karat gold and rubies with cultured pearls as teeth. In 1949, Dalí produced a diamond-encrusted pla...

Is any item as ubiquitous as the humble T-shirt? It may not be the most glamorous garment on the market, but it’s a straightforward staple and a utilitarian must-have — which is why we all own approximately one million. “Does my closet need another tee?” you may be thinking. Well, we’re here to say that yes, in fact, it does: a merino wool T-shirt , to be exact. With a soft-to-the-touch feel and moisture-wicking capabilities, merino wool has a reputation of being a “miracle textile” thanks to its unwavering longevity. And while we all know merino wool sweaters are great, merino wool T-shirts are pretty magical too. What sets a merino wool T-shirt apart? “Merino wool T-shirts outperform cotton and synthetic tees in every way,” says Dan Demsky, co-founder of Canadian brand Unbound Merino. The fabric is naturally lightweight, breathable, and temperature-regulating, making it a go-to for layering, and a guaranteed source of comfort amid the most volatile weather. It also stops sweat — ...

The world is overheating, the ice caps are melting and Kim Kardashian is launching a push-up bra with built-in nipples. And while the rest of the internet was double-checking it wasn’t April Fool’s Day when her brand announced the Skims Ultimate Nipple Bra last week, I knew it had to be true. Of course it is. And also, take all my money, please. Available for purchase on October 31, the new variation of the popular Skims Ultimate Bra features nipple-like fixtures on the front of cups, giving the illusion of braless and perfectly perky, yet natural, breasts. “No matter how hot it is, you’ll always look cold,” Kardashian promises in the witty skit, written by comedian Michelle Wolf .   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Kim Kardashian (@kimkardashian) I’ve considered many “why now?” theories for this unique product launch, including distracting from the massive Kardashian karbon footprint or poking fun at rumours that Ki...

Transitioning our wardrobe from fall to winter attire is a routine that Canadians know all too well. Our beloved linens and silks get relegated to the back of our closet, hidden behind bulky wools, corduroys and cashmeres, as we attempt to capture the feeling of a warm hug amid sub-zero temperatures. And forget about slipping on a single sweater; layers reign supreme when it comes to cold-weather cocooning. But did you know that as your clothes shift and evolve for the season, so, too, should your skincare routine ? Take inspiration from your wardrobe and opt for thicker textures and multiple layers for extra protection. Intentional layering of hydrating elixirs like serums, creams and balms will lock in much-needed moisture, ensuring that it doesn’t escape from your skin barrier. “In the winter, skin is more prone to dehydration, which can present as dryness, cracking and eczema,” explains Dr. Roni Munk , a Montreal-based dermatologist. “It’s important to change your skincare routi...

It’s no secret that celebrities love to go all out for spooky season, and Halloween weekend 2023 was no different. Between the countless stars who got all dressed up to attend the buzziest parties in L.A. to those who shared their meticulously planned looks on social media, the best celebrity Halloween costumes of 2023 did not disappoint. But while many big names sported looks that lived up to the infamous Halloween hype, this year’s costume planning was a bit more of a challenge for some SAG-AFTRA members. Due to the ongoing Hollywood strike, the union issued strict guidelines on what members should avoid dressing up as this Halloween, which essentially included all TV or movie characters from major production companies. Instead, the union suggested that members wear more generic costumes, such as ghosts, witches and zombies. So, if you’ve been surprised to see much less Barbie pink from celebs than you expected, you can thank the strike for that. Although many stars seemingly ...

This is Texture Talk, our long-running column that deep dives into the dynamic world of curly hair, from crowns of curls that are free flowing to strands that are tucked away in a protective style. “Am I accepting my Blackness more if I wear my hair curly ?” Taylor Hale ponders over the phone. “Am I rejecting my Blackness if I press my hair?” These are the burning and poignant questions about identity that have long circulated within the textured-hair community and that the former pageant queen — and the first Black woman to win on Big Brother — has grappled with since she was young.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Taylor Hale (@thetaylormack) “It’s not that I was ever embarrassed about or ashamed of my hair throughout my childhood,” says Hale, “but I learned very early on that it required more care and maintenance than other hair types.” For many Black women, this realization is the first step in a hair journey t...
