The Fenty empire is expanding but we’re not talking business — we’re talking baby! Rihanna is expecting her first child with partner A$AP Rocky, and she just announced it in the most fashionably Rihanna way possible. We’re talking straight up vintage Chanel, a blinged out belly, and street style photos to prove it.

After months (and years, to be honest) of pregnancy gossip circulating, the question of “Is she or isn’t she?” was finally settled when celebrity fashion photographer, Diggzy, shut rumours all the way down with an Instagram photo of Riri baring her baby belly captioned “SHE IS!”

As the couple took to the streets of New York City to make their debut as soon-to-be parents, Diggzy captured the moment in a series of on-brand street style photos.

The expecting mother looked like an ethereal beauty in a long vintage Chanel by Karl Lagerfeld pink silk puffer coat from the FW 1996 collection bound only by a single Gripoix button to allow for her baby bump and the rest of her streetwear-meets-opulence look to show. A bejewelled vintage Christian Lacroix pendant necklace paired with pearls rests on her belly, with some fans pointing out a potential pop-culture allusion to Madonna’s Like a Prayer album cover.

A Chanel logo leather and gold chain belt is woven through a pair of distressed wide-leg jeans, accessorized with a gold Rolex watch and a vintage Briony Raymond chunky signet ring. Leave it to Riri to make a maternity fit a moment. As for A$AP, the Fashion Killa rapper sported a knitted hoodie beneath a Carhartt jean jacket styled with baggy leather pants.

As one Twitter user put it, ‘How fitting for Rih to announce her pregnancy via a street style pic!!’ They are, after all, arguably the most stylish couple in the game. Their relationship timeline dates back to 2012 and is filled with musical collaboration, friendship, rumoured love, real love, and now parenthood.

Their first red carpet appearance as an official couple was at the 2021 Met Gala (Rihanna wore Balenciaga and A$AP Rocky wore a thrifted quilt) but it’s not at the steps of the Met where this pair acquired their collectively iconic style status — it’s in the streets.

A faux-fur moment

Just days before the big reveal, Rihanna wore a cobalt blue Martine Rose windbreaker paired with a faux-fur trimmed Saint Laurent mini skirt and strappy heels. A$AP went for an all black look with an Alyx Studio Fall 2022 faux-fur coat and black trousers

Rocking red

Here, Riri opts for a cherry red Balenciaga parka, a Martine Rose football shirt matched with Miu Miu gloves and crystal embellished Amina Muaddi heeled sandals. Rocky wears a standout furry bomber jacket, red gloves, dark pants and brown boots.

Purple reign

The Fenty mogul stunned in a Marni shearling fur jacket, Dior x Rihanna sunnies and a metallic Saint Laurent mini skirt to match purple Balenciaga boots while her partner looked dapper in an overcoat and plaid scarf complete with denim pants and loafers.

Layered up

This winter, the fashion forward duo coordinated looks as they rocked cohesive scarf and balaclava looks respectively, with the Bad Gal herself in trendy Gucci x Balenciaga puffer and silk shawl pieces.

Congratulations are certainly in order, we can’t wait to see more of Rihanna’s trendsetting maternity looks!

Intense, captivating visuals are arguably what Euphoria does best. And costume designer Heidi Bivens brings that creative energy to the wardrobe department, where clothing is symbolic of character development. Case in point: Jules Vaughn.

Played by Hunter Schafer, Jules has been a pillar of the show’s impeccable fashion reputation since it premiered in 2019. With an eye for visual art, the character’s outfits embody her natural creativity.

As the series progresses, Jules continues to examine the ways in which her self-expression connects with her transness, womanhood and her own body. And in season two, her changing style tells a story.

The latest Euphoria episode opened with an artistic ode to fan-favourite on-screen couple, Jules and Rue (Zendaya). In what is perhaps the most beautiful scene of the entire series, we see a creative montage of the couple recreating influential pop-culture references, starting with Jules as Venus in “The Birth of Venus.”

The famed painting, made by Botticelli in the late 15th century, shows the goddess of love and beauty looking ethereal and luminous as she stands on a giant scallop shell, like a pearl. The recreation depicts Jules as the embodiment of divine femininity, a theme that is deeply tied to the character’s arc.

When we first met Jules in season one, she channels Sailor Moon, sporting florals and pastels, Y2K-inspired pleated skirts and cropped baby tees with bright, colourful makeup. Her long, platinum blond tresses are accentuated with baby pink hair dye.

Despite her whimsical appearance, she struggles with her identity, feeling pressure to perform hyper-femininity in order to feel validated by men. We see her style change as she begins to feel a sense of liberation thanks, in part, to her relationship with Rue.

By the end of season one, she wears darker streaks in her hair, punk-inspired makeup and baggier, more androgynous silhouettes.

In season two, Jules feels more in tune with herself, and her fashion is decidedly edgier. This can be traced back to the character’s spotlight episode, which aired between season one and season two. Named “F*** Anyone Who’s Not A Sea Blob,” the episode was co-written by Schafer and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson.

In a conversation between Jules and her therapist, she comes to a ground-breaking revelation: “I feel like I’ve framed my entire womanhood around men.” She realizes the image of herself she presents to the world has for so long been crafted by what she thought men desired. “I’ve been trying to conquer femininity, and somewhere along the way, I feel like femininity conquered me,” she says.

She also describes her complicated relationship to puberty, and how she worried it would distance her from femininity. But then, she compares womanhood to the ocean, something which is broad, deep and strong, yet still feminine and beautiful. “I want to be as beautiful as the ocean,” she says.

In the therapy episode, we see a makeup-less Jules in muted tones. In contrast to her bright, almost distracting style at the start of the series, the natural look represents her newfound vulnerability.

This season, we can see the effects of the therapy session. Jules’s style transformation is perhaps most evident in her blunt bob hair cut. For centuries, long hair has been tied to femininity, so this decision illustrates her breaking free from societal markers of conventional womanhood and embarking on a new journey.

Jules is experimenting with fashion in the second season of Euphoria.  She wears a binder and her outfits often comprise chokers, baggy pants and an overall dimmer colour palette. In her makeup, she experiments with darker colours and sharp eyeliner designs. Through this style evolution, she frees herself from the male gaze and reclaims a sense of femininity and creative expression.

In Euphoria, Jules uses fashion as a tool for discovery and self-acceptance. As her style evolves, she continues to grow into her truest form. We’ll be watching closely

Viral moments are fashion’s most coveted currency (after, you know, actual currency). By now, designers understand that most of us consume fashion week content from our social media feeds, and that in order to cut through the digital clutter, you have to give the people something to talk about. And for Spring 2022 couture week, the conversation went in many different directions — from Chanel’s equine model to Schiaparelli’s gold-headed handbag and Viktor & Rolf’s Nosferatu-inspired wear.

Across all collections, this season’s haute couture found itself at the intersection of levity and austerity with a hint of futurism. See for yourself with our roundup of the most viral runway moments of couture week 2022.

Azzaro: The continued rise of couture for men

couture week 2022

Thanks to the likes of Dolce & Gabbana, Raf Simons, Givenchy, and now Azzaro, men have finally been included in the couture conversation. In fact, one could argue that they have become the most exciting gender to watch on the red carpet, as seen at the VMA‘s and other star-studded events. The latest ornate offering from Azzaro is sure to make an appearance this upcoming award season, as we can totally picture Machine Gun Kelly in this metallic moment.

Chanel: There’s a horse on the runway

chanel couture week 2022
Photography courtesy of Chanel

For its SS22 Couture collection, Chanel transformed its runway into a manège as brand ambassador Charlotte Casiraghi galloped down the catwalk. The equestrian, Monaco royal and granddaughter of Grace Kelly wore a Chanel jacket made of black tweed and sequins, paired with black jodhpurs and tall riding boots. In the front row, attendees witnessed the opening act from behind phone cameras, and so needless to say, the stunt sent social media ablaze. As for the horse? She’s an icon, she’s a legend and she is the moment.

Fendi: A wearable history lesson

couture week 2022
Photography courtesy of Fendi

For Fendi’s Spring 2022 Couture collection, creative director Kim Jones took a Roman holiday to the ancient city and brought back the most stylish of souvenirs with him. In case you missed one too many of your high school history classes, there’s no need to panic. The references to the Italian capital and its history are a little less than subtle while including a slight sci-fi twist— case in point: this dark and stormy dress, decorated with a painterly renaissance motif.

Jean Paul Gaultier: A texured trip through time

couture week 2022
Photography courtesy of Jean Paul Gaultier

Let’s be honest, Y/Project artistic director Glen Martens put the haute in haute couture with his reinterpretation of a Jean Paul Gaultier collection. “For me, couture means pure beauty and elegance,” he said. “Looks that have no business being on the street.” And Martens definitely delivered on that mandate with 3D metal flowers, tailored pinstripe suits and Belle Époque fabrics, with references to Gothic statues and the styles of the Victorian and Medieval periods. A surreal collection, Martens’ runway artistry received plenty of praise across social media.

Schiaparelli: Off with their heads

schiaparelli gold head

No, I’m afraid this is not a joke. This decapitated gold-headed handbag is part of Schiaparelli’s sci-fi-inspired spring selection. Starting couture week 2022 off with a bang, creative director Daniel Roseberry sent an array of galactic heroines down the runway, complete with Saturn’s rings, sun-like symbols and nods to the brand’s 1930s heritage. While we have learned to expect the unexpected at this designer’s demonstrations, I don’t think anyone could’ve predicted a bejewelled brain. As it’s already been trending on social media, let the meme-games begin!

Valentino: Couture is for all ages, stages and sizes

couture week 2022
Photography courtesy of Imaxtree

Haute couture runways have historically been walked by a very specific type of model — white, perhaps gamine, and most certainly young. Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli hoped to challenge this notion in the Anatomy of Couture, “a show that removes constraint and crosses age, background and shape.” The designer told Vogue he specifically sought out 10 house models with different body types to create varying silhouettes. The result was a decidedly more progressive runway show fit for fashion’s body positivity push.

Viktor & Rolf: Necks are overrated

couture week 2022
Photography courtesy of Imaxtree

Coco Chanel once said, “Nothing goes out of fashion sooner than a long dress with a very low neck.” Perhaps, creative directors Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren took this quote a little too far for their Spring 2022 Couture collection, as models’ necks were entirely encased in fabric. Serving more Count Dracula than Edward Cullen, the inspiration behind the adorned assortment was actually the vampire from the 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, as an ode to people hiding from COVID and “going out into the world again but cautiously.”

“I want shoppers to get asked where they got their sweaters,” writes South van der Lee, president and designer of GOGO, over email. “But I also hope they feel like they are getting a big hug.”

Such is the ethos behind the Calgary-based brand that has become a social media darling. Known for pairing millennial-esque colours and graphics with luxury wool and hand-crafted designs, the Canadian label was first launched in the late seventies by van der Lee’s mother in Alberta. In 2010, South took over and temporarily moved the operation to Toronto.

“TO was very welcoming to new designers,” she shares. “I was, however, raised in the mountains and love to ski, so it was difficult not having access to the Rocky Mountains. I decided to move back out West after six years. Now I can hike and ski all the time, and the mountains are the foundation of the GOGO brand. That’s where my inspiration comes from.”

Below, FASHION spoke to van der Lee about her love for Western Canada, cozy knitwear’s eternal appeal, and why winter should be everyone’s favourite season.

How would you describe the style of your brand in three words?

Cozy. Impactful. Heirloom.

What do you think is the eternal appeal of handmade knitwear?

I think it’s the idea that someone spent hours making it. You can see the work and the time put into a hand-knit sweater, which translates to quality and value.

What’s one GOGO sweater that is especially meaningful to you?

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by GOGO Sweaters (@gogosweaters)

The ‘No Waste’ sweater is a new piece I came up with that uses end pieces of wool balls too small to make an entire sweater, but when joined with 100s of other ends, it can make up a stunning, one-of-a-kind piece. I couldn’t bear the thought of throwing out these beautiful ends, so I decided to make a sweater one day from them and wow! What a revelation!

What’s your favourite piece from your new collection?

I love the ‘Western Skies Jacket’ coming out for FW 22/23. Each season we add new representations of GOGO’s Western Canadian roots, and this one is just fabulous. Such a wearable statement piece.

What would you say makes your sweaters so unique?

I would say our colours, graphics and fit. It’s quite a process choosing the colours for GOGO, and we change them up each season, so each hue represents a moment in time. Also, the slogans and graphics are unique. I came out with the phrase “snow babe” right before I left for Toronto in 2010. I want GOGO to be a leader in the industry. I NEVER want to follow.

How does your brand approach sustainability?

Thanks to my mother, GOGO has been sustainable before sustainability was a thing. Our sweaters are made right here in Canada and provide jobs to people in Canada. GOGO is made with mostly wool that lasts for decades. We want people to buy our pieces knowing they will be special for years to come.

How would you describe Calgary’s style?

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by GOGO Sweaters (@gogosweaters)

Calgary is known for people who, like me, want access to a city and the mountains. I would say the style of the city is hardcore, as in sporty snow gear from brands like Arc’teryx and Canada Goose. However, I break this mould wearing floral ski pants and pink puffers at the hill! I want to be core and cute.

What is your favourite season, based solely on wardrobe?

Winter obviously! I love layering, sweaters, hats and skiwear.

What is the most-worn item in your closet?

My Denim Forum high-waisted jeans and 3.1 Phillip Lim Alexa boots. I live in them.

What are five items that are bringing you joy right now?

I think I speak for all of us Canadians who are currently bundled up in warm winter-proof layers when I say it would be a — the? — dream to saunter down the streets of Paris enveloped by the magic of couture week. Every year, it’s those very streets where you’ll find the best off-runway style inspiration (I mean, we love a hunchback moment, but I wouldn’t exactly wear Nosferatu-style ear-high shoulder pads to Sunday brunch). Outside the city’s venues, guests, models and fashion’s top brass served some seriously creative street style for Spring 2022 couture week.

Forget your model-off-duty neutrals and say hello to colourful monochromatic moments, patterns reminiscent of the 1960s, ‘70s and Y2K, shearling accents, and accessories like balaclavas, mini purses and statement jewellery (See our Spring/Summer 2022 trend reports for fashion, hair and beauty).

And it wouldn’t be couture week in the city of love without a little Emily in Paris moment. Camille Razat was spotted outside the Fendi couture show in…Fendi, obviously. Meanwhile, American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour kept it light in a long white wool coat and rusty brown scarf.

Rest assured that whether it’s outside the Grand Palais or the AGO, the concrete (or cobblestones) beneath your feet can be your own personal runway. Click through the gallery below to see some of our favourite street style looks from Spring/Summer couture week 2022.
