It seems that Margot Robbie may be permanently trapped in Barbie World and, honestly, we’re into it. Although it’s been months since the Barbie movie dominated the zeitgeist, the Australian actress is showing that she’s not ready to let her fashionable character go, wearing a handful of new outfits inspired by the iconic doll.

Of course, it’s no secret that Robbie is an expert at Barbie method dressing, especially considering the stellar run of Barbie-inspired looks she wore during the film’s promotional tour over the summer. But with the help of her stylist Andrew Mukamal, Robbie is back to channelling the doll through both subtly inspired looks and head-to-toe recreations of classic Barbies.

And Robbie can’t help but lean into her iconic character when she’s off-duty, too. Take her recent date night outfit with her husband Thomas Ackerley. While on a date in New York on November 29, Robbie wore a Barbie pink Versace cropped jacket and mini-skirt set. For a glamorous finishing touch, the actress wore bedazzled heels and a sparkly mini Versace handbag.

She channelled Barbie again earlier in the week at the Gotham Awards on November 27, too. Though there was no pink in sight, Robbie donned a sophisticated black ensemble that was directly inspired by a vintage Barbie doll.

The elegant, vintage-feeling outfit, which was modelled after the Black Magic Ensemble Barbie from 1964, consisted of a strapless dress and a sheer cape by Prada. Robbie completed the look with leather gloves, large pearl earrings, a gold clutch and, in typical Barbie fashion, Manolo Blahnik open-toe mules.

At an event in Los Angeles on November 18, Robbie wore yet another look that fully resembled a specific doll, this time with a slightly more casual vibe.

For this look, Robbie (or, should we say, Barbie) swapped her classic pink accents for pops of this season’s favourite cherry red hue, channelling the 2015 Cherry Pie Picnic Barbie. The sweet daytime outfit involved a white knotted blouse patterned with red flowers and cuffed jeans, both by Bottega Veneta, that bore a striking resemblance to the 2015 doll’s pants. To round out the ensemble, Robbie sported an array of red accessories, including a woven top-handle Bottega bag, a statement belt, and of course, matching Manolo mules.

For an evening screening and Q&A that same day, Robbie went full-on classic Barbie mode with a blush pink sleepover-inspired look consisting of pink feather-trimmed pyjamas by Ukrainian brand Sleeper and (what else?) open-toed baby pink Manolo mules.

Earlier that week, the actress attended yet another Barbie screening in a hot pink blazer with a matching pink corset top, straight-leg jeans and Barbie-esque, Versace pumps.

While she’s proven that her commitment to method dressing as the iconic character is something that she takes very seriously, it seems that Robbie and Mukamal have made a conscious effort to ensure that the actress’ looks for other non-Barbie-related appearances are distinctly separate from the doll’s dainty style.

Case in point, while promoting the new Jacob Elordi and Barry Keoghan film Saltburn, which she produced, Robbie has been seen in a variety of darker, more intense looks, so different from her usual pink ensembles that they would probably send Barbie into a dark existential spiral (IYKYK).

A post shared by Andrew Mukamal (@andrewmukamal)

At the film’s November 14 Los Angeles premiere, Robbie wore a sheer black corset top and edgy unbuttoned, wide-leg suede trousers by Schiaparelli that fit the tone of the gothic thriller while being worlds apart from a typical Barbie look.

To attend the 2023 Variety Power of Women event on November 16, Robbie wore chocolate brown ensemble in a strapless bandage dress by Fendi. Not only was the dress itself in a much more subdued colour than much of her Barbie wardrobe, but the look also only featured very minimal jewellery, another detail that sets it apart from the often meticulously accessorized Barbie looks.

Robbie’s record of on-point Barbie-inspired looks has created a standard for method dressing that other stars will undoubtedly try to emulate for years to come — and we’re sure that we’ll be seeing many more perfectly pink doll-like looks from Robbie in the future as well. It is a Barbie world, after all.

There was a time, not long ago, when clothes were used for their intended purposes. Underwear laid beneath trousers. Brassieres regularly remained unseen. Pants were considered a key component of getting dressed and shoes were understood to be a necessity when leaving the house. Then came 2023 — the year fashion got freaky.

It all started with the movement to abandon pants. At the tail-end of 2022, an industry-dominating fad was percolating, with It girls like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid traipsing about sans trousers. By the time 2023 rolled around, the no-pants trend was everywhere, from TikTok feeds to high-fashion runways.

At Miu Miu’s Fall 2023 show, for instance, models walked confidently without pants, doubling down on the absurdity of bare-leggedness with bedazzled underwear. Suddenly, any regular outfit could be an elevated look once the bottoms were taken away.

Emma Corrin went pantless at the Venice Film Festival. Hailey Bieber, Taylor Swift, and other street-style regulars felt the breeze. And in September, Jodie Turner-Smith took it to couture heights by trading cheeky shorts for a designer thong by Viktor & Rolf.

While celebs and plebians alike took their bare-legged looks for a spin, another underwear-as-outerwear style emerged: the intentionally exposed bra. In spring of this year, as the weather was warming and a new season was ripe with fresh fashion possibilities, a slew of stars began sporting their ‘fits with bras on full display. From Scarlett Johansson at Cannes to Zoë Kravitz at a star-studded Tiffany & Co event, the visible bra was quickly understood to be a fashion risk worth taking.

Exposing one’s brassiere is a natural evolution of the other surrealist lingerie statements to come from the past 12 months. Just ask Hunter Schafer, who famously wore not a bandeau, not a bandana, but an itty bitty feather as a top to the 2023 Oscars after party. The look, in all its single-plume sensationalism, quickly went viral, laying the groundwork for a changing of the undergarment tides.

Not only were traditional delicates reinvented, but on some 2023 runways, everyday objects were transformed into risqué going-out garb, including rose petal pasties at Puppets and Puppets and banana-inspired separates at Area.

Throughout the year, an air of style irreverence emerged, pushing back on dressing dogmas and ushering in controversial clothing choices. Maligned as it may be, the skirts-over-pants look took off in high-fashion spaces, spotted everywhere from Shakira appearances to 2023 runways.

In a hazardous turn of events, a gaggle of famous men simply stopped wearing shoes for a time. Thanks to culprits like Jacob Elordi and Shawn Mendes, it became somewhat common to see a male A-lister (or friend of) step out without his chaussures. Perhaps the most confusing micro-trend, but important to note nonetheless.

As the weather cooled down, the outfit oddities have not stopped. Just this week, Justin Bieber was photographed refusing to use the arm-loop of his sweater. Bieber is known for his laissez-faire street style antics, but this visual has been designer-approved. Take the recent runways of COS, Fendi and Proenza Schouler, which all showed off nifty new methods to wear sweaters — other than, you know, the normal way.

When looking at the trends that emerged this past year, it’s clear the taste for counter-intuitive ensembles is stronger than ever. Belly button cutouts seem uncomfortable but popular. See-through dresses are an easy way to defy the purpose of putting on clothes. Bum cleavage, anyone?

It’s impossible to ignore the context in which these intentional fashion faux-pas have occurred. Amid soaring costs of living and an increasingly upsetting news cycle, what better time than now to reject the constraints of appropriate attire? It may indicate sheer exhaustion (why bother putting your arm through the sweater sleeve?). It could be taken as a stroke of genius (even the smallest feather can be an avant-garde statement).

Or, maybe it’s an outward expression of being easier on ourselves. Forgot your pants? That’s ok! Threw on the wrong bra? You’re now a visionary. Stepped out sans footwear? A tetanus shot may be in order, but you do you.

Alone, none of it makes sense. But together, it paints of pretty telling picture. We’ve all got a lot on our plates — perhaps we’ve progressed past the need for outfit malfunctions.

When we were dreaming up the brand, [entrepreneur] Nicolas Vu and I wrote a sentence on a piece of paper; it said, ‘Works with your skin, not against it,’” explains Sue Nabi, CEO of Coty Inc. and co-founder of Orveda. This became the foundation of the brand.” In 2014, Vu and Nabi founded the green biotech company with the goal of reinventing what it means to be a high-end skincare brand. Orveda delivers highly concentrated formulations of actives that work with skin because the brand is rooted in the world of science.”

Orvedas mission is to deliver incredible skin health solutions and formulations without the typical downsides of efficacious skincare, such as irritation, skin sensitivity and redness. Rather than focusing on aggressive treatments and over-use of harsh procedures (which causes the skin to become highly sensitized over time, a phenomenon doctors call over-processed skin”), Orveda considers the long-term health of skin and focuses on maintaining the integrity of the skins barrier, which is integral to skins overall health and function. To do this, Orveda harnesses the power of French biotech.

Over the last 30 years, the brands visionary founders, Nabi and Vu, have worked with the worlds leading scientists and medical experts. It was through these experts that they developed a deep understanding of active ingredients and the latest skincare technologies. They also began to see the limitations of traditional skincare. Enter: Orveda. Using biotechnology—a blending of natural ingredients and lab technology used to develop high-performance ingredients—Orveda products target specific skin needs effectively while maintaining the health and integrity of the skin.

As part of its mission to visibly extend the youthfulness of the skin, the clean, vegan and sustainable brand has launched the latest addition to its lineup: the Omnipotent Concentrate. The serum is the brands most potent formulation, addressing the visible signs of skin aging and targeting signs of senescence (the state where skin cells stop performing major functions, and a major driver of skin aging). Orvedas Omnipotent Concentrate targets past damage caused by external stressors (such as sun damage, for instance) and aging, and simultaneously addresses present concerns by improving skins radiance and smoothness. It also helps to strengthen and create a more resilient barrier, ensuring a healthier and better-protected complexion in the future.

Continue reading to learn more about Orvedas new Omnipotent Concentrate, and more of the groundbreaking formulations that make up the brand, all developed with cutting-edge science by leading global skincare experts.

Orveda Omnipotent Concentrate

The latest addition to the Orveda lineup, the Omnipotent Concentrate is an ultra-potent serum that is made with 16 actives, concentrated at an impressive 24 per cent. Formulated with Orvedas unique signature complex (biofermented marine enzymes, bio-tech prebiotic and biofermented kombucha), as well as biomimetic tripeptide to firm skin texture and biofermented adenosine to delay future signs of aging—just to name a few—Nabi describes the Omnipotent Concentrate as perhaps the most potent serum of all time.”

Festive fêtes are the ultimate setting to flaunt the over-the-top hairstyles you’ve waited all year to try. So, if an invitation to said holiday soirée arrives in your inbox, consider it your chance to do just that.

When it comes to holiday party hairstyles, sculptural updos are favoured, over-embellishment is encouraged, and sophisticated simplicity is admired. From glitter-coated sleek styles fresh from the runway and ponytails decorated with bejewelled accessories, to celebrity-approved looks worn by VIPs like Margot Robbie and Kelly Rowland, we’ve rounded up eight party-worthy styles that are sure to captivate on-lookers.

Ahead, holiday hairstyles to copy this festive season, plus the products, accessories, and tools needed to replicate them.

Flaunt curls and clips

Whether you’ve got naturally curly hair or you’ll be recreating this corkscrew look with an ultra-thin curling wand, Christmas soirée season is prime time to put your best head of curls forward.

To achieve this mane-like look styled by Irinel de León on Madison Pettis, split your hair down the middle to create a centre part. Then, incorporate a little holiday party sparkle by adding bedazzled hair clips or bobby pins on either side of your head.

Slick it with glitter

During the Julien Macdonald Fall/Winter 2023 show, models sashayed down the catwalk with sleek buns and slick backs spattered with glitter — and the look has lived rent-free in our minds ever since.

What begins with a simple hairstyle you’ve likely been wearing all year long is instantly upgraded with a spritz of glitter that requires next to no effort to pull off. Sure, it’s a tad avant-garde, but no real holiday party can start without a little (or a lot) of glitter. The more, the merrier, we say.

IGK’s Pre-Party Sprinkle Hair Strobing Spray disperses bursts of glitter that give off a luminous, rainbow-hued effect. After a few spritzes of this spray, your new party trick will be turning heads as you turn yours.

Try a retro ponytail

A post shared by Bryce Scarlett (@brycescarlett)

2023 was unofficially the year of Barbie, and there’s no better way to close it out than by paying homage to the blonde icon one last time. Channel a vintage iteration of the doll with this retro pony, as seen on Barbie star Margot Robbie at the 2023 Gotham Awards.

Like Robbie, whose pony was crafted by her go-to hairstylist Bryce Scarlett, opt for a side-parted bang that swoops across the face, and is then tucked behind your ear. To best capture that vintage feel, flip the ends of your pony with a flat iron to achieve a doll-like flick.

Add a few pumps of Color Wow’s Pop and Lock High Gloss Shellac serum to your ponytail to keep it free of frizz and full of shine. Plus, you can also use it ahead of styling as a heat protectant if needed.

Opt for an infinity bun

A post shared by Hayley LOGAN Hair (@haylesloganhair)

Anyone who shows up to a festive gathering with an infinity bun like this one by celebrity hairstylist Hayley Logan is sure to impress party-goers and leave them wondering, How did you do that?

What they won’t know is that this seemingly intricate chignon is easier to recreate than it looks. Once you’ve secured a sleek, low pony, begin to twist it. Wrap the hair clockwise around your base, as you would a traditional bun, and then pin it in place. Then, with the remainder of your twisted ponytail, create a loop around your index finger and pin it in place above your bun. Très chic, non?

You can never have too many bobby pins—especially when going for experimental styles like this one. Goody’s slide-proof bobby pins have never let us down, and we love that this value pack comes with 60 of them.

Sculpt a Marilyn-inspired bob

As stars rolled up to the premiere of Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland caught our eye with this Marilyn Monroe-inspired bob styled by Devante Turnbull. As much as we loved her chrome ensemble complete with a built-in cone bra, her full-of-body bob was *screaming* holiday party hair.

From old-fashioned roller sets and pin curls to big-barrelled curling wands, there is no one particular way to achieve this look. As long as it’s full of volume with an air of old Hollywood glamour, you’re doing it right. If you went the bob route this year, take it to another level by recreating this look.

Fashion with Trend

If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, especially in the 2000s, you probably had a similar dream to mine: The ability to stand in a pair of old jeans, now too big to wear, virtuously holding out the waistband to emphasize the loss. These kinds of “after” images are seared into my brain as symbols of discipline, moral superiority and the achievement of a societal standard of beauty. So seeing supermodel Emily Ratajkowski, drowning in denim several sizes too big for her, felt like being back there, when thin was everything and looking like me was a joke.

Sandwiched within an Instagram carousel of a recent photoshoot for France’s M Magazine, Ratajkowski, styled by Charlotte Collet, stands in a pair of faded, oversized (for her) Maison Margiela jeans. With her signature seductive stare, she looks into the camera while holding the waistband of the pants inches from her body, highlighting how big they are on her. Immediately, I think of Jared Fogel, the man famous for losing 200 pounds eating Subway sandwiches and taking his “fat jeans” on tour, who’s now serving a 15-year prison sentence for child sex tourism and possessing child pornography. So, not a great first impression.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Emily Ratajkowski (@emrata)

Unlike a lot of celebrity controversies, this one isn’t at all divisive in the comments section — and that’s of Ratajkowski’s own making. For someone who has built a reputation for being a politically minded feminist who challenges the objectification of women’s bodies, and has collected a fanbase of likeminded people, this isn’t a good look.

Many pointed out the hypocrisy of the fashion industry in general, lamenting over the fact that brands can make oversized clothing for thin people, but not actually make plus-size clothing for fat people. “I’ve been looking for those jeans in the second photo. If you could please return them, that would be cool,” model Tess Holliday comments, poking fun at the fact that the jeans certainly aren’t Ratajkowski’s size. “Designers won’t make plus sizes unless it’s for a photo opp where a thin person can be quirky,” another person pointed out.

For fat people, this is nothing new. We see thin people buying out larger sized clothing at thrift stores to achieve the oversized look. We see brands like The Frankie Shop advertising their oversized jeans (yes, that’s the actual style name) on thin bodies, while only selling up to an Australian size 12 (that’s around a U.S. size 8).

We see supermodels like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner being called stylish for wearing baggy clothes, while fat people are called sloppy or unfashionable for wearing the same thing. And even if fat people wanted to buy the Margiela jeans Ratajkowski wears in the photoshoot they aren’t available on Ssense, the online retailer the magazine links to. The largest size the brand goes up to is an Italian size 50, the equivalent of a U.S. size 14 (the average American woman is a size 16 to 18).

If I hadn’t already dealt with this my entire life, I’d be enraged over witnessing how easy it would be for brands to make clothing for bigger bodies if they actually wanted to. But I know the truth is most of them don’t want fat people wearing their clothes at all. Got it.

And although I don’t expect much from Ratajkowski, the real knife to the heart is seeing a photo that so obviously replicates the millions of before-and-after images that were commonplace in the ’90s and aughts in which newly thin people flaunt their weight loss by showing how big their old jeans are on them now. As someone who’s been varying degrees of fat her whole life, I desperately wanted that too-big jeans moment for myself. And as someone who accepts her body as it is now on the best days, I just want a pair of jeans that fit me.

Outside of the obvious hardship fat people face when it comes to finding clothes is the feeling that our bodies and our sizes are so often the butt of a joke; a costume thin people get to try on for fun before going back to their lives as skinny people. It’s hilarious when a small person wears clothing clearly too big for them, like clowns in too-big shoes. It’s an amusing spectacle that emphasizes their thinness as the ultimate fashion statement or accomplishment. At least, that’s what appears to be the point, because what the f*ck else could it be?

The rest of the comments on Em Rata’s post are echoes of the same sentiment — disappointed, but not surprised, that a thin person who’s made money off discussing the pressures placed on women’s bodies would turn around and make money capitalizing, intentionally or not, on a body size she’s never been. As Stephanie Yeboah, known as one of the first writers to popularize body positivity on social media, questions in the comments: “And you wrote a book about body image?”

If we wanted to entertain those coming to Ratajkowski’s defense, claiming that she probably has little say in the direction of her shoots, we’d then ask how this got through the entire team, from direction to photography to styling, without anyone batting an eye. (Likely answer: There wasn’t a single fat person on the team credits listed and France is pretty infamous for its fatphobia.)

Emily Ratajkowski seems to have forgotten that true feminists don’t just fight for their own bodies, but the bodies of all marginalized people — including fat ones.

But if we wanted to give Ratajkowski the responsibility she’s afforded herself by being outspoken about the treatment of women and the need to take control of her image, we’d ask why she didn’t think this was wrong, or why several days and thousands of comments later, she still hasn’t removed the photo or apologized. With her presumed wealth and proven influential voice, could she not have spoken up or just turned down the gig entirely? Those in positions of privilege need to practice what they preach.

Ratajkowski’s stance, since first rocketing to fame as a dancer in the music video for Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” has been that women can show off their bodies and still be feminists. True. Her book of essays My Body questions how she capitalizes on her sexuality to make money and affirms her desire to fight back against a world that wants to make her an object. Amazing. But she seems to have forgotten that feminists don’t just fight for their own bodies, but the bodies of all marginalized people — including fat ones.

Being aware of your privilege, which Ratajkowski is, according to her own words in her book, is just the beginning. Critically thinking about what the images you share say to your fans requires you to act accordingly. Maybe those jeans are just too big for her to fill.
