There’s a lot we know about Alexis Rose’s pre-Schitt’s Creek life: she’s dated all three Hanson brothers, been on a blind date with Leo, and had a tryst with Prince Harry. While snippets of her colourful love life are sprinkled throughout the series, there’s no shortage of clues to David Rose’s romantic past either. Openly pansexual, we know he had a crush on Jared Leto, suffered through an arduous breakup with Anderson Cooper, and “burned a bridge” with Nate Berkus in Ibiza. (And of course there was that ill-advised almost-throuple with Stevie and Jake.) All this to say, it’s not often we see a queer character in pop culture offered the same freedom and nonchalance when it comes to discussing romantic or sexual paramours as straight characters are.

But that was Dan Levy’s intention from the start: to create a place where everyone could love out loud.

“When I found myself in a position to tell stories on a global scale, I seized the opportunity to make a television show that might, in its own way, offer some support, encouragement and love to those who might not have it in their homes or in their schools or in their day to day lives,” Dan Levy said at the GLAAD Gala over the weekend, where he accepted the Davidson/Valentini Award celebrating LGBTQ media professionals who have made significant contributions towards promoting acceptance for the LGBTQ community.

In a recent interview with Out magazine, Levy said that, much like Oprah, he wants to focus on telling “good, inspirational stories.”

His first crack at storytelling has given us some of the most beloved moments on television—a sweet serenade, a touching coming-out moment, and a deft wine metaphor about sexuality—and earned him a global community of fans who saw themselves represented onscreen without the shadow of bigotry or intolerance, making him the ideal recipient for this year’s Davidson/Valentini Award.

Levy accepted the award—which was presented by his Schitt’s Creek castmates Annie Murphy, Noah Reid and Emily Hampshire—with a powerful speech touching on his own coming-out story.

“I think back to that time where I legitimately thought that I’d have to live with this secret — my being gay — for the rest of my life,” Levy told the audience at the GLAAD Gala in San Francisco. “I didn’t have the security of seeing a lot of people like myself being celebrated in popular culture.”

But, he added, he was loved. “I was lucky enough to have a family that supported me fiercely and unconditionally when I needed it the most… Had I not had the love to give me a sense of security, I don’t know if I would have found my way out of the closet, let alone create the opportunity for myself to tell stories on television that have effected some kind of positive change in the world.”

Beauty giant L’Oréal Paris held its annual runway extravaganza during Paris Fashion Week over the weekend, and this year’s event was particularly star-studded.

A total of 13 of the brand’s ambassadors took to the confetti-strewn runway at the Monnaie de Paris building in the French capital. It marked the first time Amber Heard and Camila Cabello walked in the show alongside seasoned catwalk professional Douten Kroes and fellow ambassadors Eva Longoria, Dame Helen Mirren, Geri Horner (aka Ginger Spice), Andie McDowell, Marie Bochet, Liya Kebede, Aja Naomi King, Soo Joo Park, Luma Grothe, Duckie Thot and Aishwarya Rai.

There were several noteworthy moments during the finale, too: namely, Helen Mirren closing the show by running barefoot down the runway in a gorgeous black and white gown (as only Helen Mirren could), and Eva Longoria’s son Santiago who joined her for the finale, only to fall asleep moments later.

The women were dressed in pieces from Balmain, Karl Lagerfeld, Dries van Noten, Elie Saab, Giambattista Valli and more for the occasion. For the first time, the show was soundtracked by a 40-person orchestra adding to the evening’s drama.

Speaking with Reuters after the show, Longoria praised the brand for its inclusivity, saying, “It is great to work with a brand that understands women, self-worth is very important, it is more than a lipstick or hair colour. We have a rainbow of diversity on the catwalk today with Korea, Brazil, India and me from Mexico. The definition of beauty is different all over the world and to have one stage celebrating that difference is really remarkable.”

After months of speculation, Forever 21 has officially filed for bankruptcy.

The brand confirmed the news overnight, saying that it will entirely cease operations in 40 countries, including Canada, and will shutter 350 stores in total worldwide, 178 of which are in the US, reports The New York Times. It will however continue to operate online as usual.

As for what has prompted the move, Linda Chang, the executive vice president of Forever 21, told the site, “The retail industry is obviously changing – there has been a softening of mall traffic and sales are shifting more to online.” Couple that with changing consumer attitudes towards fast fashion and it’s a bleak outlook for brands like Forever 21.

According to the Times, the company’s revenue dropped to USD$3.3 billion last year down from USD$4.4 billion in 2016.

In recent months, the brand has been plagued with other financial issues, too – most notably, being sued by Ariana Grande for using her likeness in an advertising campaign after negotiations with the singer fell through. As part of the $10 million lawsuit, Grande is seeking damages for copyright and trademark infringement, false endorsement and violating her right of publicity.

The brand was started in the 1980s by Do Won and Jin Sook Chang (both of whom are still running the company). Linda, the pair’s daughter, reiterated that the Chapter 11 filing isn’t the end for the company. “What we’re hoping to do with this process,” she said, “is just to simplify things so we can get back to doing what we do best.” Chang also praised her parents for their work in creating the business. “My parents built an amazing brand. When you think of fast fashion, there’s really only a handful of names that come top of mind for most people, and to be in that top list is a pretty amazing feat.”

“Let me know if you experience any irritation,” Emmanuel Vollant says in a soothing whisper, as she spreads a ginger-infused Tata Harper mask onto my face. “Just because these products are natural, doesn’t mean they aren’t extremely potent.” Vollant, a specialized aesthetician with the brand—whose most recent post was much farther south, at a Tata Harper signature spa in Turks and Caicos—is applying one of many steps in the Signature Facial at Etiket’s Tata Harper treatment room. The first and only one of its kind in Canada, the space launched in April and was designed by Harper herself, the result of ongoing collaboration between both parties. Later this month, on October 18 and 19, Tata Harper aesthetician Nik Garcia will be on-hand for a special event to launch the brand’s new Supernaturals Collection, offering a 45-minute facial featuring products from the line. According to Etiket’s president, Simon Tooley, the spa was the natural extension of a longstanding relationship between the skincare brand and the Montreal beauty destination.

“Etiket is 8 years old and we’ve been carrying Tata Harper since the spring of 2012, so it’s been with us since the beginning,” explains Tooley. “It was pretty close to Tata’s beginnings and we were one of her first Canadian accounts. We really connected and she understood who we were and what we were all about.” Etiket has been a go-to for Montrealers seeking the best in skincare, and has been moving more in the direction of clean beauty along with the changing tide of the beauty industry. “As clean beauty has evolved, we evolved with it,” says Tooley. “Seven years ago, we didn’t have the understanding we have now.” Still, the products and treatments at the Golden Square Mile shop are very much anchored in results, putting the Tata Harper spa at that cross-section of those interests. “Yes, we want you to feel good, but if you’re coming to treat something, we want to help you treat it.”

Massage figures heavily in the Signature Facial I experience here, and each product is tailored to my particular skincare needs. Vollant uses a trifecta of cleansers (Nourishing Oil Cleanser, Purifying Cleanser, and Regenerating Cleanser) to remove surface level impurities, deep cleanse and exfoliate, plus some light steaming and extraction. Next, following a few calming spritzes of the popular Hydrating Floral Essence, she applies the Purifying Mask—the aforementioned ginger-infused treatment, which does impart a warming tingle to my skin—for 15 minutes. That’s followed up with a full facial massage, using the Beautifying Face Oil and carried out with first a 24-karat gold bar, then a gua sha stone. Next comes a layer of Contouring Eye Balm and the Resurfacing Mask, also left on for 15 minutes.

Finally, Vollant applies a layer of Boosted Contouring Serum, the Elixir Eye Vitae, Hyaluronic Gel Moisturizer and a touch of Be Adored Tinted Lip Treatment. The hour-long treatment begins and ends with three deep breaths of essential oils and, on the whole, it ranks higher on the relaxing scale than any massage I’ve had. But Tooley’s words hold true, too: my skin looks radiant and lifted, with none of that post-extraction redness one might normally expect. “There’s a science behind what’s in those products,” he says. “Tata is very much about that.”

Dakota Johnson is one of Hollywood’s top names right now – and she wants to use her platform to make a difference.

Over the weekend, the actress appeared at the 2019 Global Citizen Festival to launch her new podcast, called The Left Ear. Johnson created the platform to give victims of sexual abuse and gender-based violence a platform to share their stories and be heard.

The name has special meaning with the actress explaining on Instagram, “Your left ear is the ear closest to your heart. And by listening with your heart, you can save someone even just a little bit.”

As for how the podcast came about, Johnson wrote, “One year ago I asked women and girls around the world to call me and leave a voicemail telling their stories of sexual violence, harassment, and gender-based inequalities. I didn’t want to speak on their behalf, I wanted to listen to them.” Importantly, Johnson said that she didn’t want to edit any of the stories to maintain total authenticity. “To protect anonymity the voices have been slightly pitched, and any identifiers have been removed. Other than that, they have not been edited. These are real stories from real people around the world.”

It comes one year after she last appeared at the festival and shared her number with the world to ask women to share their stories. At the time, she wrote, “Women and girls in every corner of the world face extreme sexual violence and sexual harrassment on a daily basis. Over 800 women and adolescent girls die every day because they do not have access to reliable contraceptives and basic maternity services. I don’t want to speak for you. I want to listen to you. This is my phone number. Tell me your story in my voicemail, and I will listen. There is power in numbers. Together with [Global Citizen] I will compile your stories and get your voices heard. We must achieve a world where #sheisequal.”

The first episode is now available via theleftear.com. Johnson warns listeners that the stories can be harrowing and urges them to take care of themselves as they listen but stresses that it is important we do actually hear what these women have to say. “Listening to these stories can feel very intense. So please take care of yourself if choose to listen. And I hope you do choose to listen, because listening is the most important thing you can do for someone.”

Jennifer Lopez Launches 25th Fragrance, Continues to Stun Us All

A true goddess among humans, Jennifer Lopez continues to elicit dropped jaws in basically every aspect of her life—exhibit A: her epic Versace runway moment at Milan Fashion Week. And while everything about her physical being is unearthly, at 50, she’s equally as impressive on the career side of things. Not only is there ample Oscar buzz around her role in Hustlers, but on the business side, JLo’s most recent perfume launch will mark her 25th to date. Promise is the latest addition to Lopez’s perfume empire, which has generated $2 billion in sales to date, reports WWD. “There have been so many moments in my life where I have made promises to myself — to give my all, do my best, be true to myself, never give up,” Lopez told WWD. “No matter what obstacles stood in my way, I stayed true to my promises, and I believe they helped shaped who I am and where I am today. This fragrance embodies my promises and aims to inspire every woman who has ever doubted herself and struggled along the way.” We are not worthy.

Hydrafacials Are All the Rage, Says Yelp’s 2019 Trend Report

Photography courtesy of Yelp

You may not usually turn to Yelp for beauty advice—where to find the best pho within a 3-mile radius? That’s more like it—but the user-generated review site happens to be sitting on a mountain of beauty-related data, which they’ve put to use in a recent report. To celebrate the site’s 15th anniversary, Yelp launched a deep dive into some of the site’s most notable trends, with whole section devoted to the beauty services industry. Along with the hydrafacial—essentially a less abrasive version of microdermabrasion, whereby impurities are suctioned out of the skin—the treatments and services on the uptick in 2019 included microneedling and dermaplaning, while the Brazilian wax, keratin and lash extensions all took a dive in popularity. Read the full report here.

Ezra Miller Attends PFW Sporting Another Noteworthy Makeup Look

Ezra Miller continues to cement his status as a one-to-watch where makeup is concerned. This week, the actor—best known for his roles in We Need to Talk About Kevin, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them—attended the Saint Laurent show at Paris Fashion Week wearing red lipstick, pink eyeshadow from lash to brow and the words “slut” written across his cheek. “This was not a spontaneous decision for Ezra based on a mood as I inaccurately depicted it to be, but rather a very intentional statement of political, spiritual and personal significance for Ezra,” makeup artist Lisa Houghton wrote on an Instagram post, following some apparent confusion regarding the genesis of the idea. ‘This look and the use of the word ‘Slut’ was something that Ezra felt very strongly about and was done to communicate his feelings and exact his vision.”

Darren Criss is Launching a Unisex Skincare Line

Calling all Gleeks: there’s something new to get excited over this week, and it isn’t the release of the full series on Netflix Canada. Along with his partners (siblings Madison and Matthew Ruggieri) Darren Criss is putting his talent into a new venture—one which doesn’t require any singing or dancing. That is, a unisex skincare line dubbed OneKind. “There is certainly a disparity between the popularity and more obvious nature of women’s beauty products,” the Emmy-winning actor told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s historically not as much of a male-oriented thing. We were trying to level that playing field a little bit.” OneKind is set to launch on October 1, 2019.
