Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos suspend the Peter Pilotto label

London-based fashion label Peter Pilotto has officially been put on pause. Confirmation of this halt comes from the brand’s co-designers Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos, after 12 years of collaboration. While still continuing to own the brand, the duo says that this break will pose as an opportunity to “reassess all aspects” of the future of Peter Pilotto. “The brand is a true blend of our passions and creativity, but we need time to pause and rethink before we explore our next steps in this rapidly changing world. We are excited about our next phase, whether separately or jointly,” the two said.

COS launches sustainable denim line for spring

Modern yet timeless retail brand COS has announced a new range of denim for the upcoming season, which will be produced using 100 per cent organic and sustainably-sourced cotton. Through using organic cotton, the brand is reducing its use of energy and water—two things that traditional denim jeans require in excess—which hugely benefits the ecosystem. Styles like the essential tapered high-waist and mid-rise barrel leg are visually reinvented with new stitching and patch pockets, and new rivet-free styles that are 100 per cent recyclable drive home the brand’s ethos of “buy better.” Get your hands on (and legs in) the collection here.

The NBA and New Balance embark on a multi-year marketing partnership

The NBA has acknowledged a commitment with Boston-based athletic brand New Balance. This means that the brand can now use NBA players dressed in official uniforms in their marketing material, just like athleticwear giants Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Jordan Brand and more. This journey kicks off with L.A. Clippers player (and former Toronto Raptor) Kawhi Leonard in New Balance’s We Got Now global campaign, which was aired at Friday night’s Denver Nuggets vs L.A. Clippers game. The decision for Leonard to star in this launch is no random choice. “New Balance officially re-entered basketball when NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard walked on court for the NBA All-Star Game in 2019,” said Chris Davis, vice president of global marketing at New Balance. “Now, one year later, we are excited to further solidify our position in the global basketball community by collaborating with the NBA as an official long term, strategic partner in order to continue to enhance our position as a leading athletic brand.”

RW & Co. and The Shoebox Project are coming together to gift women in communities of need

The Shoebox Project, known for collecting and distributing gift-filled shoeboxes to vulnerable women in Canada and the U.S., is partnering with retail brand RW & Co. to deliver shoeboxes beyond the holiday season. RW & Co. x The Shoebox Project Spring 2020 kicked off on February 24 and runs until April 30, with RW & Co. retail locations across Canada serving as drop-off locations for shoebox gifts. After the season’s collection, the shoeboxes will be gifted to shelters and programs that serve each store’s local community—sending shoeboxes to emergency shelters, shelters for victims of abuse and community support services, hoping to reach women at risk of homelessness. “The power of women standing together has inspired our brand storytelling for years, especially in the last few seasons. How women support each other, how we help each other feel beautiful, present, and confident that we can do anything, was the catalyst for this partnership,” says RW & Co. President Lora Tisi. The Campaign is led by RW & Co. ambassadors Tessa Virtue, Ashley Callingbull and Karine Vanasse, each one featured for championing women’s initiatives. This spring, they will each be donating a portion of their campaign proceeds to The Shoebox Project. Customers who drop off shoeboxes will be given 10 per cent off their purchase.

Lady Gaga released the video to her new single
Three weeks ago, Lady Gaga’s first single from her upcoming sixth album Chromatica was accidentally released online. Now, we’ve got a music video to go along with the track, titled “Stupid Love.” In typical Gaga fashion, there’s nothing subtle about the sci-fi-meets-pop video, which opens with her and a crew of backup dancers in head-to-toe pink futuristic outfits dancing in a desert. (Fun fact: the entire video is shot on an iPhone 11 Pro.) As for the album itself, Gaga told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that she was “miserable, sad, depressed” and “cried constantly” through the process of making it. Yet, amidst the sadness there’s joy to be found. “We are definitely dancing,” she said.

Taylor Swift directed and produced her new music video
Gaga’s not the only pop star who debuted a new video this week. Taylor Swift dropped the video for her new single “The Man,” which calls out male executives in the music industry (in a nod to Scooter Braun, whom she’s been embroiled in a feud with for several months). With the help of prosthetics and a fake moustache, Swift transforms into a man-spreading, entitled music executive, and also speaks to how differently the world views successful men and women in the lyrics. The end credits note that the video was directed, produced, owned by and starring Swift.

Maria Sharapova announced her retirement
Tennis champion Maria Sharapova announced this week that she would be leaving the world of tennis for good. In an exclusive essay for Vanity Fair and Vogue, the former World No 1 tennis player asks: “How do you leave behind the only life you’ve ever known?” In the essay, she writes about how she got her start, the discipline it takes to be a tennis champion, the many injuries she suffered, and the nagging question of whether it was all worth it. “After 28 years and five Grand Slam titles, I’m ready to scale another mountain—to compete on a different type of terrain.”

Sofia Vergara was announced as the new judge of America’s Got Talent
With Modern Family coming to an end this year this year after 11 seasons, fans of the show will no doubt be heartbroken but the good news is that Sofia Vergara, one of the show’s stars, already has her next gig lined up. Vergara will be joining Terry Crews, Simon Cowell, Howie Mandell and Heidi Klum on the judging panel of America’s Got Talent. This news comes after two of the previous season’s judges, Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough, departed the show amid controversy about a toxic culture on set. In a statement, Vergara said, “I’m so happy to join my new family on AGT. This is a new and exciting next chapter for me and I’m extremely proud to be the first Latin judge on the show. I can’t wait to watch all the talent and have fun with all you guys.”

For the fall/winter 2020 Christian Dior show in Paris, Peter Philips, creative and image director of Christian Dior Makeup, created three variations of a black eyeliner look that emphasized the personality of each model in the show. With the rest of the makeup kept fresh and natural, the eyes took centre stage, offering a perfect complement to the bold looks shown on the runway—1970s-inspired sheer dresses, plaid jackets and fringed coats. FASHION caught up with Philips backstage to learn more about he created the look.

On working with Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s creative director

“The first thing Maria Grazia told me was a bit abstract—’70s intellectual. She wanted a more natural approach, with beautiful skin, and the focus to be on the eye. We kept it kind of round around the eye, not pointy. We wanted to keep it kind of street cool, like they did it themselves.”

On nailing the look
“We decided on three variations of a rounded eye shape and used kohl and eyeliner. We enhanced the eyebrows and made them a little bit darker and more intense, to give a bit of depth to the face. We kept them natural but filled them in, trying to keep some transparency so it’s not like a block. The hair was kept natural and styled with headscarves and hats.

In terms of skin, we wanted the the skin to look fresh and natural. We used Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation as well as the new Dior Skin Correct concealer, which is my favourite. I’ve actually been using it as a foundation also. The formula is genius. Moisturizer was first applied to give a soft base which really feeds the skin and also creates a nice glowy texture that’s not too shiny. The Dior Lip Sugar Scrub and Lip Maximizer were used to hydrate and plump the lips.”

On the main focus of the beauty look

“The main focus was the dark, rounded eye with natural glowy skin. 1970s intellectual but also very individual with a carefree spirit. Skin is very important so great foundation is key. My hero products used to achieve the looks were Dior Hydra Life Crème, Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation and Dior Skin Correct concealer.”

Today, Prince Harry headed to the iconic Abbey Road Studios in London for a very special task: recording a live session with Jon Bon Jovi and the Invictus Games Choir. For this year’s Invictus Games, the sporting competition for wounded military personnel founded by the Duke of Sussex in 2014, Bon Jovi is recording a new version of his 2019 single “Unbroken,” which he wrote to shine a spotlight on veterans living with Post Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI). Honouring their service and acknowledging their strength, the song will be released in March in support of the Invictus Games Foundation.

According to the official Sussex Royal Instagram account, “the Invictus Games Choir, made up of wounded, injured and sick veterans and serving personnel from all services and different ranks of the UK Armed Forces, have come together to use the power of music to aid their recovery.” Although Prince Harry was supposed to join Bon Jovi and the Choir to sing this special song, he seemed visibly nervous in a teaser of their recording session released on Instagram. Bon Jovi shared some words of encouragement— “It’s gonna be really easy, just pretend you’re singing in your bedroom” —but Prince Harry eventually decided to “leave the vocals to the professionals.”

The special single was recorded in Studio 2 where The Beatles recorded 11 out of their 13 albums, so of course the Duke and Bon Jovi paused for a photo op on the historic crosswalk that the Brit band made famous on the cover of their 1969 Abbey Road album.

The stop is part of Prince Harry’s final round of engagements before he and Meghan step back from royal duties, splitting their time between the UK and Canada. In regards to the recent developments concerning the Sussexes’ decision to step back from royal life, Bon Jovi told The Guardian: “I don’t know what it’s like to walk in his shoes, and as an American I am further removed, but I have immense respect for the family, for his brother, himself, his wife, father, grandmother – we have immense respect for them in America.”

Launched by the duo behind the Ottawa boutique Victoire, Rendez-Vous is a new pop-up event to be held in different Toronto neighbourhoods in the coming months. You’ll find the first stop at 1586 Dupont Street in the city’s Junction nabe (it’s open today until Sunday starting at 11am each day), and April’s dates run the 3rd to 5th at Souvenir (1232 College Street, Toronto).

The Rendez-Vous concept comes after Victoire closed the doors to its only Toronto shop in December. “We love our Toronto wing of the business and want to nourish it further while embracing the new realities of commerce in the city,” says Régine Paquette, who opened the first Victoire boutique with her long-time friend Katie Frappier in 2006.

“We want to capitalize on the feedback we get from our lovely customers,” she says, highlighting how their next step in Toronto will be more focused on an intimate shopping experience in unique local areas; Paquette and Frappier have also canvassed existing customers about what pieces they’d like for their closets to make sure their pop-ups are hitting the spot when it comes to wardrobe needs. “Shopping at Victoire means knowing they’ll be in a fun and friendly atmosphere with a curated aesthetic, a commitment to customer support, and a wide range of price points. All things we pride ourselves on.”

Staying true to the ethos of supporting Canadian made and designed goods, Rendez-Vous will offer many of the names Victoire customers know and love including Eliza Faulkner, Birds of North America, Fform, Harly Jae, and Eve Gravel. You can also stock up on accessories from brands like Quebec’s Anne-Sophie Vallée and Portland’s Tiro Tiro.

Judging by its eclectic offerings, the spirit of Rendez-Vous it set to live up to the thrill-of-the-find vibe Paquette and Frappier began cultivating over a decade ago. Describing the Rendez-Vous mood, Paquette says, “It’s part personal shopping experience, part pop-up, part hang-out fun times, and all about playing with fashion!” Who could ask for anything more?

Netflix Canada

Self Made
This limited series tells the true story of Madam CJ Walker, America’s first female self-made millionaire. The African-American entrepreneur made her fortune with a haircare company, overcoming post-slavery racial and gender biases to make her brand one of the biggest successes of the 20th century. The series stars Oscar winner Octavia Spencer as Walker, Tiffany Haddish as her daughter and Blair Underwood as her husband. Jamaican-Canadian costume designer Antoinette Messam, interviewed for FASHION’s Winter 2019 issue, co-designed the costumes for the film. Available March 20.

Feel Good
Queer Canadian comedian Mae Martin stars in this semi-autobiographical series as herself, an aspiring stand-up comic living in London. Grappling with issues of love, addiction and sexuality, the series also stars Charlotte Ritchie as Martin’s love interest and Lisa Kudrow and Adrian Lukis as her parents. “We tried to make a show that’s funny, heartbreaking, and occasionally completely bizarre, because that’s what life is like,” Martin told ET Canada. Available March 19.

Phantom Thread
Set in the haute couture world of London in the 1950s, Phantom Thread features Daniel Day-Lewis (in his final film before retirement) as famed fashion designer Reynolds Woodcock. The film, which tells the story of Woodcock’s strained relationship with his “muse,” a young waitress he met at a restaurant, was nominated for six Academy Awards in 2017 and took home the prize for Best Costume Design. Read FASHION’s interview with costume designer Mark Bridges before watching the film, which hits Netflix on March 1.

Crave

Westworld: Season 3
This Emmy-winning sci-fi series about artificial consciousness is back for its highly anticipated third season. Returning cast members Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Ed Harris, Tessa Thompson and Luke Hemsworth are joined this season by Aaron Paul, Lena Waithe, Vincent Cassel and Kid Cudi. According to IndieWire, this season “promises to be a departure from its first two seasons not just because of the absence of the Wild West theme park (the Westworld, if you will) but also because it will tell more of a linear story than the series is known for.” Available March 15.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Quentin Tarantino’s critically acclaimed tribute to Hollywood’s “golden age” of the 1960s earned several Oscar nominations this year, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Director. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt (who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor), and weaves elements of the infamous Manson Murders of 1969 into its narrative. Available March 27.

The Twentieth Century
Canadian filmmaker Matthew Rankin made his feature-length debut with this film about former Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. It reimagines King’s formative years, roasting both the prime minister and Canada’s political legacies in a satire that TIFF has deemed “a bizarro biopic.” A NOW Toronto review lauds the film for its “crafty, nightmarish and Dadaist revision” of King’s life, as well as its absorbing visuals. Available March 26.

Amazon Prime Video

Making the Cut
Former Project Runway co-stars Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn are reuniting for a new fashion competition. The reality series will follow 12 entrepreneurs and designers from all over the world as they compete for a $1 million prize to invest in their brand and the opportunity to create an exclusive line for Amazon Fashion. In addition to Klum and Gunn, the series features a panel of five superstar judges: model Naomi Campbell, actress Nicole Richie, designer Joseph Altuzarra, influencer Chiara Ferragni, and former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld. The 10-episode show will release two episodes every week. Available March 27.

Judy
This film about legendary actress Judy Garland won Renée Zellweger an Oscar for Best Actress at this year’s Academy Awards. The film follows Garland’s career during the last year of her life (1969) when she relocates her stage career from America to Britain, amid health problems and substance addiction issues. An adaptation of the Olivier- and Tony-nominated West End and Broadway play End of the Rainbow, Judy also earned Zellwegger a BAFTA, Critics’ Choice Award and SAG Award. Available March 27.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette?

When she abruptly disappears without a trace before a family trip to Antarctica, her 15-year-old daughter sets out to figure out what happened and where she disappeared to. The film also stars Billy Crudup, Megan Mullally, Kristen Wiig and Laurence Fishburne, and is directed by Oscar-nominated director Richard Linklater. Available March 5.

Model and actress Kate Upton is no stranger to statement-making imagery. One of her most iconic shots is the cover of Sports Illustrated’s 2013 swimsuit issue. Standing amid icebergs on a boat in Antarctica, Upton wears bikini bottoms and an item of clothing not often seen on a swimwear-themed cover: a Canada Goose parka. Seven years after discovering the outerwear brand on the set of that shoot, Upton is its newest ambassador.

As a “Goose Person,” she has been brought on board to raise awareness about the future of Arctic polar bears in a world ravaged by climate change. Partnering with
Polar Bears International (PBI), the only organization focused solely on wild polar bear conservation, Canada Goose has created a special PBI collection of rainwear, windwear and lightweight down jackets for the Spring 2020 season, with $50 from the sale of each product going toward polar bear and environmental research.

Upton, who stars in the collection’s campaign, travelled to Churchill, Man., to visit the local PBI outpost and see the organization’s work first-hand. For the self-proclaimed “animal lover” and champion equestrian (she competed at the national level when she was a teen), this partnership seems like an organic fit. “Conservation has always been important to me and even more now that I’m a mother,” says the model, who gave birth to her first child in 2018. “I think about the world and our environment in a completely different way. I think about the legacy I’ll be leaving for generations to come and the kind of world I want Genevieve to grow up in.”

On her visit to Churchill, Upton spotted a polar bear within minutes of her arrival, en route from the airport to the hotel. That may seem like good fortune, but she’s quick to note that it’s actually the opposite. “He was adorable, but, unfortunately, seeing him there was not a good sign,” she says. “The bears roam closer to town because they are hungry and can’t go out to hunt yet because there isn’t enough ice.”

Through this experience, Upton says she’s learned that sea ice is integral to not only the bears’ survival but the planet’s. “Polar bears are the messengers of climate threats we all face,” she says. “They need sea ice as a platform to hunt on, and people around the world need sea ice to help keep our planet at a stable temperature…so what happens in the Arctic doesn’t stay in the Arctic.” She’s also quick to rattle off worrying stats about the bears’ plight: “There are 19 different polar bear populations across the Arctic, with 19 different stories,” she says. “Churchill’s polar bears are one of the most threatened. The number of polar bears in this population has declined by about 30 per cent since 1987—a drop that is directly related to longer ice-free seasons on Hudson Bay.”

With a team that included PBI chief scientist Steven C. Amstrup, Upton explored the Arctic tundra around Churchill both on the ground in a state-of-the-art Tundra Buggy and in the air via a helicopter ride that led to some prime bear spotting. “I even saw a mama bear and her cub!” says Upton. “To be able to visit such a remote place and see them in their natural habitat is something I hope everyone can experience at least once in their lives.”
