Fashion with Trend

Last night the Canadian Screen Awards, which took place in Downtown Toronto, saw a wave of celebs wearing florals, metallics and striking colours.

The crime drama Cardinal took home 7 awards, tying with CBC’s Anne with an E, based on the classic Lucy Maud Montgomery novel Anne of Green Gables. Irish-Canadian Amybeth McNulty, who plays Anne in the series, wore a gold sequin gown alongside the stars of series Wynonna Earp, Dominique Provost-Chalkley, Emily Andras and Katherine Barrell, who all sparkled delicate and feminine head to toe sequins.

Following last week’s melancholy news that Schitt’s Creek would be leaving after its sixth and final season, the beloved series cleaned up at last night. And not just in awards—their stars cleaned up nicely too. Catherine O’Hara donned a long-sleeve yellow and orange floral patterned gown that we think her character Moira Rose would approve of. Co-star Annie Murphy’s gown incorporated not one but two of the top trends of the night: her chunky-sequin skirt was tied in at the waist with a zesty lemon ribbon. The same yellow colour was seen on The Great Darkened Days star Sarah Gadon’s strapless floral babydoll dress.

To spite the unwelcome snowfall in Toronto earlier in the day, we were delighted to see some fluorescent neon garments brighten up the red carpet. Nominated Supporting Actress Selena Lee sported an eye-catching yellow-neon dress.

Going host-free this year reminded us everyone who stepped up on stage was equal. Elegant and at-times more casual, the show rang true for classic Canadian style, even with the common sight of men’s blue suits brought nostalgia for the Canadian tuxedo, without the denim faux pas.
