Pyer Moss first collaborated with Reebok in the spring of 2016, when they debuted a hardened streetwear collection of mens and womenswear during New York Fashion Week. Now it looks like the dynamic duo will be extending their partnership with the creation of a new line called Reebok Studies_,where Pyer Moss designer Kerby Jean-Raymond will serve as artistic director.

According to a press release, Reebok Studies_ is all about “fostering and developing young design talent” by working independently with upcoming designers, artists and personalities. The blank underscore at the end of the name exists as a placeholder for whoever the brand chooses to collaborate with. Though the brand will be designed by Jean-Raymond, he will focus on designing each collection with one new subject at a time. “The idea would be that Reebok studies ‘X’ personality and do a deep-dive and focus on that person,” said Jean-Raymond in an interview with HYPEBEAST

“I felt like there was a lot of focus around general product and not enough focus on the themes and the fashion components that we know to be cool. I understood that to ask a company who was in motion with so many projects to sit and focus on other young designers was a lot for them, so I made myself available.” Jean-Raymond’s goes is to grow the brand by hiring those who best fit the Reebok Studios_ vibe.

The Haitian-American designer said Reebok Studies_ was created due to the “inspiration he got from the roster of talent” surrounding Reebok and Pyer Moss. The division was first pitched back in 2018, and has since been through a number of rebrands before being brought to life as Reebok Studies_.

“The creation of Reebok Studies_supports the brand’s commitment to fostering and developing young design talent and delivering products with a purposeful story,” said Karen Reuther, Vice President of Creative Design.

Jean-Raymond says he’s honoured to be working on such a new concept with Reebok, and that the continuation of working with established and ‘unknown’ reators is just as compelling.

Although we’re not quite sure when the first collection will land, we just hope that the first drop isn’t too far along so we all can sport some Reebok Studies_fits.

You’d be hard pressed in this day and age to walk into a café and not find a version of avocado toast on the menu. It’s reached the point where the dish has not only taken over the food scene, but developed into something bigger, transcending its spot on the plate to become a cultural symbol of sorts and (let’s not forget) the butt of almost every millennial joke.

But while it’s clear we are living in avocado crazed times, the green pear-shaped fruit hadn’t reached the skincare industry until now, with the launch of Glow Recipe’s  Avocado Melt Sleeping Mask.

You may already know about the brand’s watermelon version. The millennial pink mask was an instant hit with customers, selling out seven times over on their website and garnering a wait list of more than 8,000 people at Sephora. “People loved the lightweight texture and the AHAs that resurfaced skin effectively,” says Sarah Lee, co-CEO and co-founder of Glow Recipe. “We heard from our customers that they wanted the same benefits but needed extra moisture.”

That’s where avocado came in. With its nourishing qualities, the antioxidant-rich fruit made the perfect new hero ingredient. It’s a creamier version of its pastel pink sibling and adds a huge boost of hydration–something much needed now that winter is upon us. “It features avocado in a high concentration,” says Christine Chang, fellow co-founder and co-CEO. “74% of the formula contains four forms of avocado: avocado extract, avocado oil, avocado butter, and avocado flesh.”

This new formula also includes soothing Manuka honey and Polyhydroxy Acids or PHA’s to offer gentle exfoliation and give a calming effect to skin. So come to this mask for the avocado fever, but stay for the soothing and hydrating formula.

For those who don’t consider themselves great cooks (🙋🙋🙋), written recipes can be pretty intimidating, especially if said non-cooks are visual learners. Why else do you think those quick one-minute how-to video recipes on your Instagram and Facebook feeds are so popular? Seeing the actual recipe come to life on a screen makes it seem less daunting, and it doesn’t hurt if the dish itself looks extra tasty (more incentive to make it!).

Having said that, written instructions are still helpful, especially for listing ingredients or referencing a step you may have missed at a glance. So wouldn’t it be great if you could have a cookbook with both the written recipe and a how-to video to go along with it? Best-selling author Greta Podleski’s book Yum & Yummer—the first cookbook ever to feature written instructions, full-page food photos and how-to-videos for every single recipe—gives you all the options you need.

“If Instagram, Pinterest and Buzzfeed Tasty had a baby, this cookbook would be it!” the Food Network Canada alum describes her book which features delicious and healthy recipes with gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options. Bonus? All of the recipes use common, everyday ingredients found at your local grocery store, making them that much more accessible to the, ahem, self-proclaimed non-cooks.

Want a taste of what to expect from Yum & Yummer? Check out the how-to video below for Podleski’s (vegan optional) Chocolate Avocado Pudding—a foolproof dessert that’s not only healthy, but also tasty.

In a partnership between the MTV television network and the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Marc Jacobs will receive the Fashion Vanguard Award on August 26.

As one of the most innovative and important contemporary designers working today, we can’t think of anyone more deserving of the award. “For some reason Marc’s show is always the most important place to be seen, the one place where you know all the people who matter will be,” a fan of Jacobs’ once told the New York Times.

Marc Jacobs launched his namesake line in 1986 and has been pushing creative boundaries to their outer limits ever since. Perhaps the most memorable instance of his insouciant creativity was the 1993 grunge collection he did for Perry Ellis, where languid models strutted down the runway in oversized flannels and slouchy beanies. Though the collection led to his dismissal from Perry Ellis, it has become a fan favourite and key pieces from the collection were recently reissued in a special “Redux Grunge” capsule collection.

From 1997 to 2014, Jacobs served as creative director for Louis Vuitton in addition to running his own wildly popular line. At Louis Vuitton, Jacobs was responsible for some of the brand’s most memorable collaborations with artists, including a graffiti design by Stephen Sprouse and Takashi Murakami’s unforgettable rainbow monogram. And though the beloved Marc by Marc Jacobs diffusion line shuttered in 2015, its youthful, accessible designs will always be remembered for helping to define the cutesy, Gossip Girl-inspired aesthetic of the mid 2000s.

Jacobs is a particularly good candidate for the award considering many of his designs are heavily inspired by music. In a recent interview with Vogue, he recalls hearing “Smells like Teen Spirit” for the first time and being drawn to it in more ways than one. “Nobody had introduced me to Nirvana. It was like a magnet, and that’s how I feel a lot of my life was. It wasn’t something I sought out; it just affected me immediately. I had a primitive connection to Sonic Youth and Nirvana and a lot of other things at that time,” the designer says of his relationship with the ‘I Want My MTV’ generation.

After finding inspiration in a vintage pink MTV sweater found in a thrift store, Jacobs incorporated MTV’s iconic block logo into his 2017 resort collection.

So, besides winning prestigious awards, what else has Jacobs been up to? Just average stuff including designing the outfits for Cardi B’s legendary “I Like It” music video, teaching a fashion design MasterClass and attempting to become a YouTube influencer. What can we say, the man never stops.

There is a lot of pressure placed upon modern women. In our pursuit of a perfect life, we’re tasked with climbing the career ladder, maintaining healthy relationships, sharing photos with followers from around the globe and when we’re ready, raising a family. Then, on top of these hallmarks of success, we’re expected to make time for candlelit baths, meditation classes and fine-line reducing facemasks.

We’re juggling a lot of balls as we strive towards the pedestal of perceived perfection. As the stress to achieve ultimate life balance has intensified, we often turn to the top-shelves of our bathrooms, where dozens of skincare products promise just a small piece of the perfection we seek. In our fast-paced lives, skincare routines feel like something we can take control of; that lineup of jars and bottles are a security blanket, of sorts.

However, smooth and dewy skin—the kind that’s reminiscent of a glowing Instagram filter—can be an overwhelming endeavour. It requires extensive research, significant funds and a whole lot of time. The days of simple cleansing and moisturizing are over: we’re told balms, serums, toners, acids and oils are all essential steps. Then, you need to make sure you’re using the right product for your skin type, and that you’re swiping, slathering and patting the correct products together in the right order.

Skincare can be soothing, but it can also be time consuming. Multipurpose products are one way you can simplify your routine without sacrificing results. When you combine the properties of two products in one bottle, you clear up space in your bathroom, in your schedule and in your wallet. You’re multitasking in every other area of your life, and now, skincare is starting to catch up.

Laneige, the cult-favourite Korean-brand famous for their ultra-hydrating products, has made it their mission to create innovative yet uncomplicated skincare. Their latest product is a testament to this commitment: it took 19-years of research to develop and is the first 2-in-1 technology of its kind. Cream Skin, a toner and moisturizer hybrid, combines the softening and absorption powers of a toner with the hydration and protection benefits of your favourite moisturizer. Using their Cream Blending Technology, Laneige uses a high pressure blending process to break down cream into nano units, immersing it into a toner without causing separation. The result is intense moisture delivered in a light texture that your skincare shelf has never seen before. And, more importantly, deep hydration and fast absorption that your complexion will thank you for.

You already know your skin needs moisturizer, and chances are, you already understand why. Moisturizer soothes dryness, prevents wrinkles and creates brighter, more balanced complexion. A good moisturizer strengthens your skin barrier and locks in hydration and other effective skincare ingredients. Without it, you lose an important layer of protection, and your skin may become dehydrated, flaky and dull.

Toner is a skincare step that fewer people are familiar with. Many of those who are swabbing their face with a toner-soaked cotton ball each evening aren’t entirely sure what it does. When you were a pimple-prone teen, there’s a chance that the three-step skincare routine you ordered from an infomercial included a toner. Those toners contain alcohol that kill acne-causing bacteria, but they also strip skin of its moisture. The toners made popular by the K-beauty industry serve different purposes: soften after cleansing, balance your PH levels, provide hydration and prep skin for the following steps of skincare. It’s a key product on the road to that ultimate skin glow.

The moisture-boosting ingredients found in K-beauty toners vary. Laneige’s Cream Skin uses green tea, a heritage ingredient of their parent company, AMOREPACIFIC, that is grown and managed on their green tea fields in Jeju Island. It’s what they do with this green tea, however, that’s particularly special. The green tea used in Cream Skin is actually white: it’s grown under complete shade, is shielded from light to encourage more amino acids and is harvested only once a year. The tea is then extracted using a Dutch cold brewing technique to ensure a high concentration of amino acids. The end result is an amino acid-rich White Leaf Tea Water that strengthens the skin barrier and encourages deep hydration. It’s also important to note what isn’t in Cream Skin: the product is fragrance free and is formulated without parabens, phthalates, PEG-based surfactants, synthetic pigments, animal-derived ingredients and triethanolamine.

Cream Skin’s unique 2-in-1 product is a multitasking formula that really knows how to multitask. You can simply pour, pat and go for easy application. You can also take Cream Skin on the road as a mist (spray for a boost of hydration whenever skin feels dry, before or after makeup application, for added moisture and glow), or turn it into an ultra-luxe express sheet mask (wet cotton pads product, leave on for two minutes and pat in remaining Cream Skin until absorbed). At $43.00, it’s the simple and effective product that will streamline your nighttime and morning routines. Life is already complicated enough, your skincare doesn’t have to be.

As July rolls into August, we are slowly but surely reaching the end of summer (*sheds single tear*). As the hot weather has now made the annual transition from welcome to unbearable, it’s difficult to pull an outfit together that’s not just denim cut-offs and a t-shirt. But all is not lost. There’s still one month left of sunshine and hot weather, which is just enough time to switch out your standard denim cut-offs with something a bit different.

This summer, seemingly every influencer — see: Amanda Steele, Marie von Behrens, and Claudia Sulewski, — has been spotted wearing a pair of denim bermuda cut-offs. While they do remind us a bit of middle school dress codes, stars like Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Selena Gomez have established extra-long denim shorts as a strong contender for the ‘It’ trend of summer 2019.

Below, we’ve rounded up 10 of our favorite denim bermuda shorts for you to browse through while soaking up the sun.

Whether you’re lazing at the cottage with hours at your disposal or just squeezing in a few chapters here and there between hectic summer activities, there’s a buzzy new book out there for you. From breezy beach reads to thought-provoking essays and beyond, here’s what we’re adding to our reading list.

Fleishman Is in Trouble

Remember that viral Gwyneth Paltrow profile by Taffy Brodesser-Akner? Or the one about Bradley Cooper’s reticence? The New York Times writer’s debut novel about ambition, divorce and mid-life upheavals—told through an unexpected but very satisfying narrative conceit—is all set to be her next runaway hit. “When I turned 40, my friends started getting divorced,” Brodesser-Akner tells the Guardian, about the impetus for the novel. “I wanted to understand it better because I had so much anxiety about divorce – from the minute I agreed to marry my husband, I have been in an obsessive defence against our marriage ending.” Available now.

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous

Award-winning Vietnamese-American poet Ocean Vuong’s debut novel is an epistolary exploration of race, family, masculinity and cultural displacement. “One of my obsessions both in poetry and the novel is to be thorough with the investigation of American life,” Vuong tells Oprah Magazine. “Both the good and the bad. Can we find joy in that? How can we carry those simultaneously complicated truths into the future and how do we rescue each other without lying about who we are?” Available now.

Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion

Jia Tolentino worked at The Hairpin and Jezebel before heading over to The New Yorker so when it comes to intuitively understanding how the internet shapes public discourse and even self-image, she’s always on the money. Her book of essays, Trick Mirror, examines the effects of the internet, social media and self-obsession on modern culture. In case anyone still needs convincing, Zadie Smith has declared it “a whip-smart, challenging book.” Available August 6.

Evvie Drake Starts Over

Host of NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast where she and her colleagues discuss everything from watercooler TV to under-the-radar indies, Linda Holmes’ first love has always been romance novels. So she set out to write her own, albeit one in which rescuing each other isn’t the end goal of the couple at the centre of the love story. “It was important to me that the characters, who have problems, didn’t want the relationship to be a substitute for all the other things they personally needed to deal with,” she tells FASHION in our summer issue. Available now.

I Like To Watch: Arguing My Way Through the TV Revolution

Emily Nussbaum, the New Yorker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning TV critic, has been writing about television for over 20 years, ever since an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer “spiked [her] way of thinking entirely.” She has since seen the medium go through a renaissance period, evolving from something akin to “a disposable cup” to arrive at what is now arguably considered its golden age—the era of prestige TV. Her first book, I Like to Watch, is a collection of previously published essays (aside from one new one) that spans ten years of her writing, elucidating just how both the medium and its audience have changed. Available now.

How Could She

Set in the ever-shifting world of New York media, this new novel by Toronto native and Vogue contributing editor Lauren Mechling explores female friendship, ambition and jealousy through the complicated relationship between three women. “It’s a breezy, fast-paced read,” writes FASHION’s Isabel Slone, “but undercurrents of darkness, jealousy and torpor preclude it from the ‘beach read’ category.” Available now.

The Yellow House

Sarah M Broom’s memoir spans many generations, traumatic events and natural disasters, revolving around the house in New Orleans where she and her 11 siblings grew up. “For me, the house began as the idea of belonging to a place that you don’t feel represents you or even belongs to you fully,” the author tells Entertainment Weekly. “And so, from the place of the house, the story for me became about New Orleans and the way that New Orleans is mythologized — the way that people feel so deeply that they know it. Or that it’s doing something for them. Within the mythology of New Orleans, the actual people who make New Orleans the place that most people love are just completely out of the story. I saw the act of writing the book of me as a cartographer, reimagining, revising, expanding a map of a sort — to include all the people I know, all the places I know, that I never see on the literal and also theoretical map.” Available August 13.

When Dame Helen Mirren greets me at the door of her hotel suite, my immediate reaction is to curtsy. Not just because she has played the Queen and is the female equivalent of a knight but because the woman is so well respected that, quite frankly, she deserves it. But rather than tut-tutting and nodding, as you would expect from someone with a distinguished title, she radiates warmth with a wide, open smile and ushers me in. The publicists quickly scatter, and suddenly we’re one-on-one. Her outfit of a long-sleeved black and white polka-dot dress cinched with a patent-leather belt accessorized with pearl drop earrings and black leather booties is elegant with flourishes of badassery—just like the actress herself.

“Why has it taken so long? It’s very annoying. It’s the first time in my life that I wish I were younger.”

Mirren is in Toronto to host L’Oréal Paris’s Women of Worth Awards Gala as one of the company’s brand ambassadors (she’s the face of Age Perfect Cell Renewal Rosy Tone Day Cream), and whether she is thinking of #TimesUp, the Women’s March or the conversation about the pay gap in Hollywood, the current climate around the future of females is definitely on her mind. “Something amazing has happened,” she says, taking a seat. “Why has it taken so long? It’s very annoying. It’s the first time in my life that I wish I were younger.” At 72, Mirren is otherwise very happy with where she is in her life. “It’s more interesting, I’m freer, I’ve got more money,” she explains. In fact, her mother made a point of telling her not to worry about aging, assuring her that something wonderful would happen. “I have to say it transpired to be absolutely true,” she says. For Mirren, this happened around age 50, when she felt “that sense of ‘Oh, I see—this is the advantage of getting old.’” She explains, “When you reach each age, you find that the reality of being that age is great and you wouldn’t change it.”

“When you reach each age, you find that the reality of being that age is great and you wouldn’t change it.”

Which is why she was thrilled when Allure put her on its September cover last year as part of its ban on the term “anti-aging.” “It was something I always said to L’Oréal when I first came on board,” she says. “I so personally disapprove of it; I think it’s wrong. It puts women at a disadvantage.” The other opinion she shared with the beauty company was that there should be no retouching of her in photos. (Clearly, neither request cost her the contract.) Mirren sees advocating for these changes in the beauty industry as part of the larger picture that has contributed to the current sea change. “It’s all these little building blocks toward what’s happening now at this moment,” she says.

“I so personally disapprove of it; I think it’s wrong. It puts women at a disadvantage.”

At the same time, Mirren recognizes the value in beauty products themselves—especially for what they can provide mentally and emotionally. Last year she was quoted as saying that although she loves moisturizer, it “probably does f— all,” but today she clarifies that what she meant was it’s about how these products make you feel. “If you feel good, your whole demeanour—your whole way of looking at the world—is a completely different thing,” she explains, adding that she loves makeup and wears it almost every day. “The world is a complicated, difficult, challenging place to be, so any ammunition for your battle with it is a good thing.”

Following the success of the duo’s first collection in Spring/Summer 2019, UNIQLO has announced that they will be teaming up with the Northern Irish designer yet again. The new Fall/Winter collection with JW Anderson will be launching in October and follows the theme “Great British Outdoors.” In a press release, Anderson explained, “For this latest collection with UNIQLO we really kept to the idea of British classics. There are some elements like tartan fabrics that are instantly recognizable as British, but then unique in that we have remade them to also be LifeWear.”

This collection will see the combination of UNIQLO’s attentiveness when it comes to fit and functionality, and Jonathan Anderson’s reputation for innovative designs that embody British tradition. I’m going on my first camping trip in a few weeks. Normally dry shampoo would be number one on my packing list for an excursion where running water won’t be on the menu, but I’m taking a sabbatical from them at the moment. As a fine-haired, shampoo-every-other-day person, I’ve always been a heavy dry shampoo user, misting various oil-absorbing powders along my hairline, and around my crown to boost volume. But after using it every other day this past winter, my already dry scalp started to resemble aerial images of cracked earth, so I’m taking a break.

For those devoted to weekly blowouts (or the snooze button), it’s hard to imagine life without dry shampoo. But it wasn’t always a styling staple, says hairstylist Kevin Mancuso. Early in his career, the now global creative director for Nexxus remembers Psssst! (a successor to Minipoo, considered one of the first commercial dry shampoos), being frowned upon by the industry. “The 70s and 80s were about washing your hair every day,” says Mancuso. It wasn’t until the 90s, when “hairstylists started saying ‘it’s better for your hair not to wash it,” though Mancuso says there wasn’t conclusive evidence about that. Then came the rise of the blowout, which helped catapult dry shampoo to stardom. “If you’re having your hair blown out and you have really thick, coarse curly hair, it really preserves your investment.”

Stephen de Heinrich de Omorovicza—whose hair is so full, healthy and shiny, it’s distracting—isn’t a big fan of dry shampoo. During a visit to Toronto this past spring, the co-founder of his namesake skincare line told me so very diplomatically after I shared that I’m worried my liberal use has caused a bit of a drought on my scalp. He recommended Omorovicza’s Revitalizing Scalp Mask, a Hungarian Moor Mud-infused treatment which features exfoliating salicylic acid and flake-fighting celery extract. It’s the brand’s single hair product, which is why de Heinrich de Omorovicza says he had a lab sample on his desk for years before launching it. “I kept thinking ‘we don’t do hair, we don’t want to take on the whole hair thing,’” but he eventually came around to the idea that the scalp is an extension of our face, and is working on a second hair product that will launch next year. My scalp looks and feels a million times better after using it, along with a clarifying shampoo.

I’ll likely return to my regular dry shampoo routine come fall with a few tweaks, including using dry shampoo sheets to bridge the gap between washes. Similar to how blotting papers help de-shine a greasy complexion, you just press the papers infused with oil absorbers like rice powder and charcoal along the hairline and part to refresh your roots, without the build up of powder on the scalp, or your bathroom counter. (The late Karl Lagerfeld, who used dry shampoo daily, prevented powdery residue from getting all over his perfume bottles by reserving application for a special room in his house.) There are anti-frizz sheets too, which came before the dry shampoo versions, which are infused with lightweight oils to help quell flyaways and static. Unlike their conventional aerosol can counterparts, these hair sheets are a travel- and eco-friendly alternative, making them perfect for everything from on-the-go touch ups to camping trips.

By all accounts, Kanye West’s Sunday services are joyous affairs. Based on leaked footage from the invite-only, celebrity-studded events – reportedly Orlando Bloom, Courtney Love and David Letterman have all attended – an identically-dressed gospel choir performs masterful renditions of Christian standards while accompanied by a live band. The choir is reportedly flown into whichever location West has decided to hold the service in that week, and has backed up the musician on spiritual adaptations of his own songs. West’s wife Kim Kardashian swears the services are more concert than church service, but it does seem as if everyone who attends has congregated to worship – whether that’s at the altar of Jesus or Kanye West remains to be seen.

Now it seems West is looking to harness the success of Sunday service by potentially creating a themed clothing line around it. According to WWD, West filed a trademark for “Sunday Service” on July 19th that includes “bottoms, dresses, footwear, headwear, jackets, loungewear, scarves, shirts, socks and tops.” The application was filed byMascotte Holdings, Inc., a company that has previously filed trademarks on West’s behalf.

If I had to guess, I would bet the the merch will be entirely black-and-white featuring wavy, skateboard-inspired graphics that are tailor made to appeal to the hypebeast/hypebae set. In any event, Kanye has a lot of talented people working for him so it’s almost guaranteed to be better much better designed than Justin Bieber’s clothing line, Drew.

It’s unclear when the merchandise might be available, but we’re definitely keeping our eyes peeled. (Apparently, West also filed an entertainment trademark for the term “Half Beast” in April. We wonder what that’s all about…)

When one thinks of Coco Chanel, the first thing that comes to mind is likely a string of pearls, or a “little black dress.” But in addition to being one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20thcentury, she was also an accomplished costume designer. Chanel designed loose-fitting costumes for the Ballet Russes and the flapper-inspired costumes for Alain Resnais’ 1961 film Last Year at Marienbad, which is playing at the TIFF Bell Lightbox later this summer.

Last Year at Marienbad tells the story of a man trying to convince a woman of a previous relationship they shared; an affair that the woman doesn’t seem to remember. Its mysterious narrative disrupts the traditional cinematic chronological constraints to make way for an avant-garde blend between reality and fiction. It is considered one of the most important works to emerge from the French New Wave movement and was awarded the Golden Lion — the highest honour a film can receive — at the Venice Film Festival in 1961.

Chanel’s timeless elegance meshed perfectly with the mood of the film and the costumes play a substantial role in the movie, dropping hints about the story’s chronology.  The black chiffon dress worn by Delphine Seyrig even became known as the “dress à la Marienbad.”

Last year, Chanel supported a restoration of the film, which premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival.

Toronto-based cinephiles can rejoice because the film will be playing as part of a summer-long Alain Resnais retrospective at TIFF.  Last Night at Marienbad has two screenings as part of Time After Time: The Films of Alain Resnais, on July 27th and August 11th. Click here for more details.
