While we all may be dreaming of summer days spent idling away at the beach, with salt in our hair and the sun on our skin, that’s just not the reality for the majority of us. We’re more likely than not still spending our days at an office or behind a computer screen. But that doesn’t mean we can’t pretend. Salt sprays have long been the answer to beach-y hair without the beach, and while they do deliver that just-out-of-the-ocean feel, spritzes of this sort also have a reputation of being drying and dehydrating. Luckily, there are a handful of products on the market today that deliver A-grade windswept texture without the grit of earlier iterations.

A little bit of this argan oil-infused mousse goes a long way to achieving perfectly undone waves. Just rake through wet hair, give it a few scrunches, and wait for beach waves to appear—no vacation days needed.

Formulated with rice protein in the place of sea salt, this cult product from Jen Atkin delivers California girl waves plus a dose of shine and body. You can also go ahead and skip the perfume after a few spritzes of this stuff, which is scented with the brand’s light floral North Bondi fragrance.

The natural antithesis to salt sprays, sugar sprays give hair texture and wave without the thirst. Wella’s version goes on damp hair for volume and hold. Talk about sweet.
