Season 3 of Netflix’s Bridgerton may have only recently ended with the culmination of #Polin‘s love story, but we’re already looking forward to the next Bridgerton sibling finding their match. Now, we know just who that lucky sibling will be. On July 23, the official Bridgerton Instagram account revealed that season 4 of the hit Regency-era show will focus on the second eldest sibling, Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thompson — and we couldn’t be more excited.

Readers of the book series by author Julia Quinn that the show is based on will know that Benedict and his eventual love story is among one of the most beloved by fans — and for good reason. Below, everything we know about season 4 of Bridgerton, including just who catches artsy Benedict’s eye. Spoilers ahead.

Bridgerton season 4 will follow Benedict Bridgerton

Following in his literary sibling’s footsteps and after much speculation, season 4 of Bridgerton will delve into the romantic life of Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thompson. Despite being the second eldest of the eight Bridgerton siblings, Benedict has largely been a mystery to fans of the show, often portrayed as the artist of the family who’s looking for a good time and is the most “lost” when it comes to his place in the world (and in his family).

While season 3 of the series saw Benedict explore his capacity to love, engaging in a throuple with widow Lady Tilley Arnold and her friend Paul Suarez, the season ended with Benedict deciding that he wasn’t quite ready to settle down and take the marriage mart seriously, turning down Tilley’s offer of a monogamous relationship.

While this ending may have left audiences scratching their heads, convinced it meant that season 4 would follow sibling Eloise Bridgerton on her quest for love, fans of An Offer From A Gentleman, the book which Benedict’s season will be based on, know that love comes to the venturesome Bridgerton when he least expects it — or even really wants it.

In a recent interview with TVLine, showrunner Jess Brownell said the ending of season 3 and Benedict’s decision serves as a hint for the upcoming season. “I think that he is someone who has never been able to commit. Not only to a person, but to a path or a passion or even a hobby,” she told the outlet. “He’s a renaissance man and that comes with it, the ability to do lots of different things.”

Benedict’s love story is pretty unique

As the black sheep of the family, it only makes sense that Benedict’s love story would stand out in a different way from his siblings. While the past three seasons of the show have employed us some of our favourite romantic tropes including fake relationships, enemies to lovers and — most recently — friends to lovers, Benedict’s season will focus on a Cinderella-like romance.

And yes, we know who he’ll be pursuing. That would be Sophie Beckett. As fans will quickly find out, Sophie is the daughter of an Earl who eventually becomes her stepmother’s maid (sound familiar?). Let’s just say that, like the OG Cinderella, Sophie and Benedict’s first meeting in the novel is one of mystery and intrigue and also takes place at a ball. A masquerade ball, that is; with Benedict falling for a mysterious “Lady in Silver.”

We’ll most likely see Bridgerton writers take some creative liberties from Benedict’s original story

If there’s one thing Bridgerton the series is known for, it’s a switcheroo. Since its first season, the show has become known for its commitment to diversity and inclusion in its casting, and that includes casting leads from different backgrounds. In season 2, Kate Sheffield from the books became Kathani Sharma (played by Simone Ashley), a South Asian character whose backstory, culture and history added even more depth to her character and love story with Anthony Bridgerton. And fans are hoping we’ll see a similar switch-up with Sophie Beckett.

While the casting of Sophie hasn’t been confirmed, a recent casting call for a character named “Emily” has piqued fans’ interests. Per Collider, the casting call is looking for someone to fill a “major recurring role,”  with the character described as someone between 24 and 30 years old, who is “plucky, endlessly resourceful and having trouble trusting others.” In addition, the character is scripted as an East Asian female. While Emily could be a new character, many fans think this is actually the casting for Sophie. Sneaky!

Benedict’s sexuality is another change from the original source material. Since the first season, fans have been speculating over the character’s sexuality. In season 3, viewers were seemingly given confirmation that the character identifies as bisexual when he entered a throuple. Speaking to TVLine, Brownell identified Benedict “as being pansexual,” adding that “gender is not that important when he is finding attraction.” With this in mind, it may mean that we’ll see more of this romantic exploration in season 4. While Brownell told The Wrap that while the introduction of Sophie “is definitely still in the cards,” the writers are going to “continue to explore his fluidity.”

Bridgerton season 4 doesn’t have a release date

Arguably the most pressing question on fans’ minds is when in the heck is season 4 of Bridgerton being released. The answer is: We’re not really sure. As of now, there’s been no announcement of when the next season will premiere, but filming is reportedly set to start happening in the upcoming months, with some reports claiming that filming started this past June in London. Given the typical delay between seasons, chances are we won’t be seeing Benedict and his paramour on our screens until 2026 — which gives us ample time to rewatch the series one or two, or 50, more times.
