With every award show that airs, from the BAFTAs to the Critics Choice to the Screen Actors Guild and, finally, the Academy Awards, a clearer picture emerges of 2019’s top film contenders. They may not all tap the same titles as nominees, but the result is a rough draft of must-see movies. This year’s crop of favourites are worth the watch not just for their show-stopping performances (see: Glenn Close in The Wife) but some key takeaways in the beauty department, too. Without further ado, here are our nine MVP beauty lessons from 2019’s awards season darlings—the good, the bad and the ugly—plus the products you’ll need to turn inspiration into action.

A Star Is Born
On day four of your hair washing cycle? Side-step a Jackson Maine mop and make hair powder your friend. Sadly, few among us can pull off a head of greasy hair as well as Bradley Cooper.
A few sprays and you will eradicate oil slicks, no matter how many days have passed since your last wash. With your seemingly clean looking hair, someone will definitely want to take another look at you.

The Wife
We should all be so lucky to age like Glenn Close: gracefully, and with the utmost elegance. Close’s Joan Castleman proves there’s no more winning combination than healthy skin and stylishly cropped silver hair.

Destroyer
Nicole Kidman in Destroyer is the ultimate inspiration to be generous with the sunscreen. (Kudos to the team of makeup voodoo artists for pulling this transformation off. Because we all know Kidman’s actual face looks like it’s been permanently shielded from sunlight.)
This daily sunscreen shields skin from the environment and pollution while providing a tint to minimize the look of damage you may have already incurred. As for any secrets that may be eating you up from the inside like Kidman’s Erin Bell, you’re on your own.

Suspiria
Never have we craved copper hair more intensely than watching the stunning horrorfest that is Suspiria‘s 2018 remake. Hair colour of the year? We think so.

In 2019, a queen that’s going to reign for 45 years would go dewy with a CC cream that doubles as her daily moisture shield.

The Favourite
Who says makeup is just for women? This critics’ favourite flipped the Hollywood standard by having its female players go relatively makeup-free, while dudes got dolled up in horn-shaped wigs, powdered skin and plenty of rouge. As Nicholas Hoult’s Robert Harley said, “A man must look pretty.”

This article was originally published in March 2024 and has been updated. There may be a famine of beauty in the world, but Fall 2024 fashion month kept us well-fed. From February to March, the world’s major style capitals served no shortage of sartorial splendour and polarizing cultural antics. The Row went viral for banning the use of phones at its hyper-exclusive show. Coperni debuted a bag made of 99 per cent air . There was even a Kate Moss doppelgänger gallivanting about! But through it all, the lasting excitement came from the looks on the runway — which will set the tone for fall winter 2024 fashion trends. Designers continued to showcase their preference for peplum , sheer and elevated athleisure while bringing fresh pairings into the mix. Meanwhile, cold-weather staples like hats and coats took on different roles with luxe textures and unconventional shapes. From controversial new high-fashion codes to more-is-more accessorizing themes, we’re breaking down the bigg...
