Helena Bonham Carter makes a statement on the suffragette movement with limited edition scarf
Brora, a fine Scottish cashmere company, announced this week that it has partnered with three Save the Children ambassadors to create a range of accessories. One of those ambassadors is the incomparable Helena Bonham Carter. For the limited edition collection, Bonham Carter has designed a cashmere scarf with the words “Phenomenal Woman” printed on it, in reference to Maya Angelou’s poem Phenomenal Woman. The scarf is available in either pink and white, or purple and green — the latter being a symbolic representation of the “Votes for Women” sash Emmeline Pankhurst wore during the suffragette movement. And in case you needed any more of an incentive to buy the standout piece, 10 per cent of the proceeds made from this collab will be donated to Save the Children, helping children build better futures.
Jane Fonda announced she’s not going to buy any new clothing from now on
The last clothing piece Jane Fonda will ever purchase is the red coat she was arrested in (four separate times!) during Fire Drill Fridays. This vow to quit shopping in protest of consumerism is how Fonda is putting her activism into action with the actress telling The Hollywood Reporter, “I’m speaking out against consumerism and so I have to walk the talk.” Fonda founded Fire Drill Fridays in response to a line from Greta Thunberg’s World Economic Forum speech where the teen activist said, “Our house is on fire.” Every Friday there is a new theme, and is an opportunity for the communities near Capitol Hill to hear stories and ideas about the environment. When founding these iconic Friday protests, Fonda says she and the team decided they should all be dressed in red — hence her coat. However, the movie star and activist didn’t already own anything in the colour, so she purchased the coat and officially closed her wardrobe doors.
Victoria Beckham posed with a jacket she calls “the reason [she] loves Canada”
Victoria Beckham was in Toronto this week, gracing Torontonians with her presence at various events around the city. One stop was at Cityline where she rocked Hilary MacMillan’s signature “DON’T TELL ME TO SMILE” jacket. Beckham posed alongside Tracy Moore in her Instagram story, with a smile absent from both of their faces. “Kisses from Canada” and “Kisses Toronto X,” she wrote on the post. In another post that featured just the back of the jacket, Beckam wrote, “This is why I love Canada” with a couple of laughing emojis. The size-inclusive, vegan varsity coat was inspired by the Me Too movement and Toronto-based designer MacMillan says that if wearing the jacket starts a conversation, that is the best thing that can come out of her clothing. Mission accomplished.
